Exiles keeper Jordan Wright was the hero in a tense stalemate at Rodney Parade as Newport County and Grimsby Town shared the points after a match defined by two crucial penalty saves and fine margins at both ends.
Wright produced a superb stop to deny Charles Vernam in the 74th minute, diving smartly to his right to keep out the Grimsby forward’s spot kick and preserve parity in a game where both sides had chances to take maximum reward.
The visitors had earlier been frustrated from the penalty spot themselves when Jackson Smith brilliantly saved Nathan Opoku’s effort on the hour, ensuring the contest remained level in a nervy and hard-fought encounter in South Wales.
The opening period was largely scrappy, with Grimsby creating the clearer openings through set pieces. Wright was called into action early on as a corner caused confusion in the box, while Kieran Green struck the post from another dangerous delivery as the Mariners applied sustained pressure.
Andy Cook was also well marshalled by Matt Baker and Ryan Delaney, with Newport County forced to defend a series of corners and wide deliveries throughout the half.
At the other end, County’s best opening of the first half arrived in added time when Ged Garner dragged a shot wide after good approach play involving Michael Spellman, with the hosts beginning to find more attacking rhythm.
After the restart, Christian Fuchs’ side improved significantly and earned a penalty on 61 minutes when Harvey Rodgers brought down Garner. Opoku stepped up but saw his low strike well saved by Smith, who then reacted quickly again moments later to deny substitute Tanatswa Nyakuhwa after continued Newport pressure.
Grimsby then had their own opportunity from the spot after Kabia was fouled by Baker, but Wright’s outstanding save to keep out Vernam ensured the game remained level and underlined his importance once again.
Both sides continued to push in the closing stages, with Cole Jarvis and Spellman involved in promising Newport moves, but neither could provide the final pass needed to unlock a winner.
