Newport County and Nik Tzanev battled the elements at Rodney Parade, but a second-half strike from Exeter City ended hopes of progression in the Vertu Trophy.
In difficult conditions on the banks of the River Usk, the visitors proved a level above, with Tzanev producing a series of impressive saves to keep Newport County in contention before Ed Turns’ decisive goal early in the second half.
Head coach David Hughes made four changes for the encounter, with Nik Tzanev, Anthony Driscoll-Glennon, Ciaran Brennan and Bobby Kamwa coming into the starting line-up. Exeter City also rotated heavily, making seven changes from their previous outing.
Heavy rain and strong winds made for a challenging contest, with both sides struggling to find rhythm in the early stages. Exeter applied steady pressure, but Tzanev was assured in dealing with a number of deliveries into the box and a sharp effort from Ed Francis.
Newport County grew into the game before the break, with Kai Whitmore influential in midfield. The hosts came closest to opening the scoring when Sammy Braybrooke won possession high up the pitch and fed Kamwa, whose curling effort from 18 yards forced a fine save from Jack Bycroft. Ben Lloyd also went close, firing over from a tight angle.
The decisive moment arrived five minutes into the second half. A corner from substitute Ethan Brierley caused problems, and Ed Turns converted from close range to give the visitors the lead.
Exeter continued to press and Newport County were forced to rely on Tzanev, who produced excellent saves to deny Reece Cole and others as the visitors looked to extend their advantage.
Despite late changes, including a debut for academy player Harri Pugh and a return from injury for Moses Alexander-Walker, Newport County were unable to find a breakthrough as the visitors held on for victory.
