Match Report | Newport County 1-2 Crystal Palace U21

report

Newport County were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace U21s at Rodney Parade in the Jersey Mike's Subs Trophy, bringing the Exiles' campaign in the competition to an end.

There were several notable inclusions in the County starting XI, with youth team prospect Rocco Lenney making his first appearance in the starting line-up. Shaquille Gwengwe also returned to action following the completion of his three-match suspension, while James Crole was handed his first start since the beginning of May.

The Exiles made a positive start to proceedings and created the first opportunity of the evening. A misjudged clearance from the Palace defence fell kindly for Kieron Evans, who reacted quickly to get an effort away first time, only for the visitors to recover and make an important block.

Debutant Rocco Lenney was soon involved at the other end, demonstrating his defensive awareness with a well-timed interception in a dangerous area to prevent Palace from making further progress. His intervention allowed County to regain possession and move forward, eventually winning a corner.

Despite County's encouraging opening, it was the visitors who took the lead. A loose ball inside the penalty area fell into the path of Jasper Judd, who found himself in space and made no mistake with his finish to put Crystal Palace ahead.

County responded positively and looked to find an immediate equaliser. Crole showcased his ability by skilfully shifting past his marker before creating space for an effort on goal, although his attempt on his weaker foot sailed over the crossbar.

The hosts continued to apply pressure and came particularly close through Dan Sassi. Aaron Lewis delivered an inviting ball into the penalty area, which Sassi met with a well-directed header. However, his effort struck the crossbar before the Palace defence reacted quickly to clear the danger.

As the first half approached its conclusion, Ged Garner attempted to draw County level with an effort from distance. A loose ball dropped into his path, allowing him to strike powerfully towards goal, but his attempt narrowly flashed wide of the post.

County emerged for the second half with renewed energy and intent, immediately looking to put the visitors under pressure in search of an equaliser.

Sassi attempted to pick out the returning Gwengwe with an ambitious chipped pass, but the delivery carried too much weight and was comfortably collected by Palace goalkeeper Harry Lee.

Moments later, the Exiles continued to threaten, with Crole finding an opportunity to test the goalkeeper. His low, driven effort caused problems for Lee, who was unable to gather cleanly but managed to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

The sustained pressure eventually paid off as County restored parity through Crole. Gwengwe produced an excellent piece of individual play down the right flank, confidently working his way past his opponents before delivering a dangerous ball into the penalty area. Crole had found space inside the box and made no mistake with his finish, seeing his effort strike the woodwork before crossing the line to bring the Exiles level.

With momentum firmly behind them, County continued to push forward and looked increasingly dangerous in the attacking areas.

Gwengwe came close to producing a spectacular moment when he attempted an acrobatic bicycle kick following a delivery from Matty Smith. Cameron Evans initially flicked the ball into his path, but Gwengwe's effort sailed over the crossbar and was subsequently ruled offside.

The Exiles continued to demonstrate their threat at both ends of the pitch, with Sassi producing an important defensive block to deny Joe Gibbard from distance. The resulting loose ball found Gwengwe, who turned sharply and drove past his marker before attempting to curl an effort towards goal. However, his strike narrowly missed the target.

Palace also continued to pose a threat, forcing County into some important defensive work. A dangerous effort from the visitors looked destined to test the goalkeeper, but substitute Ciaran Brennan reacted quickly to produce a crucial block inside the penalty area, diverting the ball behind for a corner.

Despite County's improved second-half display, the visitors regained the advantage. David Angibeaud found himself unmarked inside the penalty area and took full advantage of the opportunity, confidently striking into the bottom-left corner to restore Palace's lead.

The Exiles refused to surrender and continued searching for another equaliser as the closing stages approached. Kieron Evans was presented with a late opportunity to rescue a point for County, but his effort was well saved by Lee, who ensured the visitors maintained their advantage.

Despite a determined second-half performance and Crole's first goal since returning to the starting line-up, County were unable to find a second equaliser as Crystal Palace U21s secured a 2-1 victory at Rodney Parade. The result brings the Exiles' Jersey Mike's Subs Trophy campaign to an end, with Palace progressing to the next stage of the competition.
