Newport County fell to a 4-1 defeat against Italian giants AS Roma at Rodney Parade, but Hayden Mullins' side produced an encouraging display for long spells against the Serie A outfit.
Goals from Mario Hermoso, Konstantinos Koulierakis, Thomas Castro and Matías Soulé meant AS Roma left South Wales on a high.
Kyle Cameron also marked his first goal at Rodney Parade, after firing home a header late in the second half.
The Exiles started brightly and carved out the opening opportunity of the evening. Trialist A caused problems for the Roma defence before threading Harrison Biggins through on goal, but the midfielder's effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Biggins went close again moments later, this time attempting an audacious chipped effort from distance that forced Mile Svilar into an impressive save to keep the scores level.
Roma threatened from a set-piece as Paulo Dybala whipped a dangerous delivery into the area, but Trialist A rose highest to confidently head clear.
County continued to grow into the contest. Cameron Norman battled well to win possession outside the penalty area before picking out Christian Doidge with an inviting through ball, creating another dangerous opening for the hosts.
Norman was again at the heart of the action midway through the first half, producing a superb dribble that sparked another promising attack.
Despite sustained pressure and several close-range efforts, the Exiles were unable to find the breakthrough, and Roma punished them just before the interval.
Hermoso reacted quickest inside the penalty area to fire a close-range finish into the bottom-right corner and hand the visitors a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Mullins made his first changes at the break, introducing Shaun MacDonald and Tom Davies in place of Christian Doidge and Jordan Wright.
Roma started the second half on the front foot, although Norman produced an excellent block to deny an early chance. However, the visitors doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Castro calmly converted from the penalty spot.
Further substitutions followed as Ged Garner and Cameron Evans replaced Shaquille Gwengwe and Matt Smith, but Roma soon added a third.
Just after the hour mark, Koulierakis powered home a header to extend the Italian side's advantage.
C. Evans became the first player cautioned after a strong challenge on Paulo Dybala before Mullins continued to rotate his squad, introducing Kieron Evans and Moses Alexander-Walker for Yahya Bamba and Ciaran Brennan.
K. Evans made an immediate impression, striking a well-hit volley from outside the area that tested the Roma goalkeeper.
Cole Jarvis and Dan Sassi were then introduced, replacing Lee Jenkins and Trialist A, as County continued to search for a way back into the contest.
Roma added a fourth late on when Soulé found the net with a superb long-range strike to cap an impressive attacking display.
The Exiles did manage to reward their supporters with a late consolation. From a set-piece, Cameron rose highest to power a header against the back post and into the net, ensuring County finished the evening on a positive note.
While the score line favoured the visitors, Newport County produced plenty of encouraging moments against elite opposition and will take positives from a competitive performance as preparations continue for the new campaign.
