Match Report | Notts County 3-1 Newport County

Report

Newport County were defeated 3-1 at Meadow Lane by promotion-chasing Notts County.

It was the Magpies who took all three points as the Exiles were unable to fight back despite a second-half goal.

Lucas Ness scored the first two goals within a matter of minutes, heading both efforts into opposite bottom corners.

Harrison Biggins reduced the deficit to one with a back-heel effort in the 65th minute, but it was Jayden Luker’s curling strike that sealed the Magpies’ victory.

County continue to sit in 22nd place, one point above the relegation zone, with Barrow and Harrogate also losing their games.

Christian Fuchs made five changes to the side that suffered a 2-0 defeat to Crawley Town on Good Friday.

Ryan Delaney, Liam Shephard, Cameron Evans, Ben Lloyd and James Crole made way for Lee Jenkins, Joe Thomas, Matt Smith, Ged Garner and Nathaniel Opoku.

For Notts County, Martin Paterson made two changes following their late defeat to Salford City.

Alassana Jatta missed out through suspension, with Lee Ndlovu coming in, while Matthew Dennis dropped to the bench as Ollie Norburn returned to the starting line-up.

Ndlovu had the first chance of the game as a low cross found him in the box, but he was unable to set himself and fired wide.

Notts County continued to threaten, with Keanan Bennetts’ free-kick curling over the bar and failing to trouble the County defence.

The Magpies eventually capitalised in the 20th minute as a corner from Palmer found Ness, who guided his header into the bottom right corner to open the scoring.

Moments later, Ness doubled the lead, once again meeting a corner and looping his header into the opposite corner.

County’s first real opportunity came through Bobby Kamwa, who drove towards the box and created space, but his effort was blocked.

The hosts responded quickly, with Tom Iorpenda advancing through midfield before shooting from distance, but his effort lacked the pace to trouble Jordan Wright.

The final stages of the first half saw little in the way of clear chances, with Notts County taking a two-goal lead into half-time.

It was the Magpies who threatened first after the break, with Palmer finding space outside the box but dragging his shot wide.

They continued to press, with Conor Grant driving into the area before seeing his effort saved and turned behind for a corner.

From the resulting set-piece, Ndlovu went close, but a strong save from Wright kept the ball out.

County responded well as Opoku found space on the wing and delivered into Kamwa, but his one-on-one effort was denied by James Belshaw.

The Exiles pulled a goal back when a scramble in the box saw the ball fall to Biggins, who cleverly back-heeled into the net.

Biggins almost added another soon after, with a long-range effort deflecting narrowly wide for a corner.

But Luker sealed the result for the hosts as Iorpenda played him through on goal, and the substitute calmly curled his finish into the far corner.
