Match Report | Pontypridd United Vs Newport County

Match Report Pontypridd United

A sun-drenched USW Sports Park witnessed the start of Newport County’s preparations for the 2025-26 Sky Bet League Two season, with 1-1 draw against Pontypridd United of the Cymru South.

After a scrappy opening 10 minutes, Newport won a free-kick on the edge of the Pontypridd box. Anthony Glennon’s effort creeped over the bar.

Moments later, County were able to quickly break away from midfield and switch play to Anthony Glennon. His pass met Bobby Kamwa inside the box while his effort was stopped by the Pontypridd keeper.

During the closes stages of the first-half, it was Newport who continued to gain some more opportunities. A header from new arrival Lee Jenkins looped over the woodwork from a corner, while on the stroke of half-time, Anthony Glennon’s free-kick from the left-hand side was met by skipper James Clarke, who’s diving header bounced over the bar.

Half-Time

5 minutes into the second-half Moses Alexander-Walker’s darting run opened up Pontypridd’s defence, Ged Garner’s cut-back was met by Tom Davies who smashed home the opening goal of the evening.

The hosts levelled the score just before the hour mark, when Jacob Carney unfortunately mis-controlled Nelson Sanca’s back pass.

78 minutes into the game, Ged Garner nearly put Newport back in front. His shot was well saved by the Ponty keeper who needed to stretch, stopping Garner’s effort from nestling into the bottom corner.
