With the Welsh patron saint David’s Day just on the horizon, this week's Matchday Playlist exclusively features Welsh artists or bands with Welsh members, with songs from the likes of Tom Jones, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers, Feeder, Super Furry Animals, The Rogues, The Automatic and more.

This week's featured artists:

Fel i Fod by Adwaith

They are an all-female Welsh-language indie rock trio from Carmarthen, West Wales, formed in 2015. They’re widely regarded as one of the most important modern bands performing in Welsh, known for blending indie rock, post-punk, experimental pop and alternative sounds. The trio built their identity around a shared commitment to making modern alternative music in Welsh while pushing beyond traditional expectations of what Welsh-language rock could sound like. Last year they released Solas, a sprawling double album recorded across multiple countries. Adwaith had evolved into a band comfortable working on a larger, more cinematic scale. The record explored themes of memory, language and global identity while retaining the emotional intimacy that defined their earlier work.

Have U Ever Been to Wales by The Bug Club

They are a Welsh indie rock trio known for their witty lyricism, stripped-back garage rock sound and prolific songwriting. Formed in Caldicot, Monmouthshire, the band emerged in the late 2010s as part of a new wave of UK guitar acts blending lo-fi energy with sharply observational storytelling. The group centres around core members Sam Willmett and Tilly Harris, whose conversational vocal style and playful musical chemistry define the band’s identity. Their songs often feel spontaneous and intimate, driven by jangling guitars, minimal production and a tight rhythm section. Live performance has been central to The Bug Club’s growing reputation. Their shows are known for a relaxed, humorous atmosphere, with between-song banter and an unpretentious stage presence that mirrors their recordings, emphasising momentum over polish.

Old Machine by Year Of The Dog

A UK alternative rock band known for their emotionally direct songwriting, textured guitar sound and a style that blends indie rock with elements of shoegaze and post-punk. Emerging in the early 2020s, the group built momentum through grassroots support, independent releases and a growing reputation for intense, atmospheric live performances. Formed by a close circle of friends with shared influences across alternative and underground guitar music, Year Of The Dog developed a sound rooted in contrast. Their music often balances melodic clarity with layers of distortion, pairing intimate vocal delivery with expansive instrumental arrangements. This dynamic creates a sense of tension and release that has become central to their identity.
