Matchday Playlist | Newport County vs. Gillingham FC

Gills

There is a spooky theme to this week's Matchday Playlist. With Halloween just passing, we feature songs that mention themes surrounding the celebration, including the likes of Jamie T, Michael Jackson, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Kasabian, Talking Heads and more!

This week's featured artists:

Willie Miller is God – JJ Bull

Something a little bit different in this week’s playlist with a song about a former footballer. JJ Bull is a multifaceted creative hailing originally from Aberdeen, Scotland, and now based in London. He works at the intersection of football analysis, writing and music, making him a rare blend that stands out in the world of sports media. By day, Bull is a football writer and analyst with The Athletic, producing work on clubs, tactics and broader football culture. By night, he creates live-loop music performances and videos themed around football, often improvising songs about footballers and football culture. His YouTube channel “FitbaThatba” features much of this work. The song is about the former Aberdeen and Scotland midfielder once described by Sir Alex Ferguson as "the best penalty box defender in the world."

Telling on Me – Eurekas

A top band from the area, Eurekas formed in October 2021 when songwriters and guitarists/vocalists Jack Perrett and Dan Burridge turned their pandemic-era virtual collaboration into a full band. During lockdown, Perrett and Burridge exchanged ideas via voice notes and WhatsApp, building up melodies, lyrics and guitar parts until they decided to bring their partnership to life on stage. They describe themselves as offering “snappy, punchy pop songs played on guitar and with plenty of attitude.” Eurekas aim to deliver energetic, guitar-led songs with meaningful lyrics (for example, “Falling From Your Grace” tackles themes of power and moral failure). Aboutsound Blog described Telling on Me as a “softer, gentler and warmer sound than the more boisterous tunes we have heard from them previously.”

Wild Curse – The Now

The Now are a young rock outfit hailing from South Wales. The band came together after the founding members, having completed stints in various cover bands, decided they wanted to create original music. The band blends energetic, guitar-driven rock with a strong melodic sense and modern alternative sensibility. An early write-up described them as producing “guitar-massive numbers” and noted their youthful energy. Their influences range broadly from classic rock guitarists to contemporary indie and rock bands. With their debut album under their belts, they are positioned to grow further, building on their songwriting, refining their sound and expanding their audience across the UK and beyond. Wild Curse was released on Tuesday and is available to stream on all major platforms.
