Matty Jacob spoke to the media ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two clash against Colchester United at Rodney Parade, discussing his start at Newport County, settling into life with the Exiles and being named September’s Player of the Month.

Matty Jacob says he has settled in well at Newport County after receiving a warm welcome from his new teammates and being given the confidence to make an immediate impact.

“The lads have been really welcoming. Obviously, straight into the side when I arrived, so it just gives you the confidence from the manager to go and play your football. I feel like I've done pretty well.”

Jacob also spoke positively about his experience under Hayden Mullins, praising the team's style of play and believing County can compete with any side in Sky Bet League Two.

“We play some attractive football, I think. At times we've shown that we can compete with anyone in this league. It's time to start believing throughout the group and throughout the club that we can beat anyone.”

The defender highlighted the strength of the defensive unit and the competition for places within the squad.

“I'm really enjoying playing alongside Skip. Jenks is obviously very solid as well, and Cam Norman. But anyone who comes in, JT's come in, Alfie the other night in both the Jersey Mike games. There's a lot of competition, but no matter who comes in, we look pretty solid at the minute.”

Jacob expressed his pride at being named Newport County's Player of the Month for September, particularly after receiving recognition from the supporters.

“Really, really proud. Buzzing with that one. I really appreciate it from the fans for sure.”

He also praised the supporters for their backing since his arrival at Rodney Parade.

“Really positive, nothing but good things to say about them. I've heard some really nice things about myself.”

Jacob believes the team's work ethic has been central to their recent performances and growing confidence.

“I think we've got a really hard-working group, so if anyone comes to play against us, they know they're in for a tough game. They're going to have to really work if they want to beat us.”

Looking ahead to Saturday's fixture at Rodney Parade, Jacob is eager to build on County's home form and hopes the Amber Army can once again create a strong atmosphere.

“Really looking forward to it again. Hopefully Rodney Parade's bouncing again, and we can start fast and hopefully get another win.”

Jacob believes County are moving in the right direction and says maintaining their strong home form while collecting points away from home will be important.

“I don't want to put anything on it, but I think we're definitely going in the right direction. Just if we keep our home form unbeaten, and then pick up points away from home, then you are going to pick up points, and you're going to be closer to where you want to be than the other end.”

The defender acknowledged the difficulties of last season but believes the quality added to the squad has helped shift expectations and build confidence.

“We've brought in a lot of good quality players, and I think if there was any doubt at the start of the season, I think that should be maybe shifting towards the opposite way. We are really hard to beat, and I think if you're a team that's hard to beat, then you're going to draw games, you're going to win games, pick up points.”

“If there was any doubt at the start of the season, then I think picking up the win against Grimsby was massive, a few points away from home, and it's just something good to build on.”

Jacob explained that the opportunity to join County was an easy decision after a difficult period with injuries.

“I've had a tough couple of years with injuries, so when I got the call from Hayden, it was a no-brainer, really. He said he wanted me to come straight in, so I'm more than happy to be here and help, hopefully achieve something.”

He added that playing regularly and having the manager's trust has made a significant difference.

“It's been a tough couple of years, and I'm already enjoying my time here. It's good to be playing week in, week out, and the trust from the gaffer, I'd appreciate it, so it's nice.”
