Neil Bailey to Be Hospitality Guest for Cambridge United Clash

Neil

Newport County are delighted to confirm that former midfielder Neil Bailey will be our special hospitality guest for Saturday’s fixture against Cambridge United at Rodney Parade, February 21, 3pm.

Born in Wigan, Bailey joined the Exiles from Burnley in August 1978 after coming through their apprentice system. A hardworking and selfless midfielder, he was known for doing the spade work that allowed others to flourish, earning huge respect from team-mates and supporters alike.

Bailey was an instrumental figure during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history under Len Ashurst. He played a key role in Newport’s promotion-winning side, Welsh Cup triumph, and memorable run to the quarter-finals of the 1980–81 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Across his time at Rodney Parade, Bailey made 184 league and cup appearances, scoring 11 goals, and cemented his place as a firm fans’ favourite.

He left County in October 1984 to join hometown club Wigan Athletic and later had spells with Stockport County and Blackpool, briefly returning to Newport on loan during the 1986-87 campaign. After hanging up his boots, Bailey moved into coaching, working at youth level with Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson before becoming assistant to Roy Keane at Sunderland. He later worked as a Coach Educator for the PFA in the North West and, in 2024, graduated from Leeds Beckett University with an MSc in Coach Development.

Despite a distinguished career in the professional game, Bailey has always maintained strong ties with his former Newport team-mates and the Amber Army.

Supporters in hospitality on Saturday will have the opportunity to hear from Neil as he reflects on his playing days, his coaching journey, and some unforgettable memories in black and amber.
