Head coach Nelson Jardim felt his side showcased the spirit and mentality in the squad after they claimed a 3-0 win at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Cameron Antwi, David Ajiboye, and Courtney Baker-Richardson secured a third consecutive win for the Exiles in Cheshire, and also marked their first league double over the Railwaymen in over 50 years.
“We show spirit every day at the training ground, we fight together and try to improve together,” said Jardim post-match.
“This team has belief and that’s why we have had these results.
“We knew it would be tough because Crewe are one of the biggest clubs in the division and are fighting for promotion.
“We knew we would have to be organised and need a bit of luck in periods but you could see a consistent team who know what they are doing when pressing and when defending set plays.
“The threat going forward was there and we always felt that we were a dangerous team.
“We have momentum and confidence but that comes from work, belief and togetherness. We have managed to put good results together and the spirit in the squad is my biggest win.”
He added: “You can see the players fighting and enjoying their football. “That comfort is there now but we cannot feel comfortable.
“We can only grow outside of the comfort zone and don’t worry, I will make sure we are out of our comfort zone.”
Jardim reflected on areas for improvement, especially with ball retention.“We stayed in the game but if we had kept the ball a bit better for longer periods then we would have controlled the game better,” he finished.
“That’s not there yet and is an area where we need to develop and improve, but we just have to enjoy a big win away.”
