Nelson Jardim | We knew that we needed it and it feels good

Nelson Jardim

Head coach Nelson Jardim hailed ‘a big win’ after his side secured a 2-1 victory over Morecambe at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night.

A first senior goal from emerging talent Joe Thomas in the opening stages of the first half had put County on track for a second consecutive home win.

However, as Morecambe threatened to steal a point with Gwion Edwards’ close-range strike 11 minutes from time, David Ajiboye quickly restored Newport’s advantage, securing the Exiles' first back-to-back victories in four months.

“It was a big win. We knew that we needed it and it feels good,” said Jardim post-match.

“I am so pleased for the players, who have been fantastic since the beginning of the season.

“The way that they have fought over the last two games has been outstanding, and today we had a big goalkeeper.

“The game was very difficult and Morecambe were tough to deal with. We were brilliant in the first half and I was disappointed not to score another goal or two.

“In the second half you have to give credit to Morecambe, who are fighting for their lives.

“They pushed us with long balls and throw-ins but we were ready to deal with that. We did well and were then lucky to have a goalkeeper to help us get the win.”

Townsend delivered a brilliant performance in the midweek clash, pulling off a number of crucial saves to earn County the win.

And the Exiles boss was full of praise for his shot-stopper.

“Nick was outstanding and he was in the first game against Morecambe,” he added.

“He has been great for us, not just on the pitch but off it and in the dressing room.

“He addresses a couple of things, is always eager to win and is a tough character but winners are like that.”
