Newport County marked the end of the 2025-26 campaign with a private awards evening at BarCode, following the club’s dramatic League Two survival at Barrow.

After a season that tested the group in every way, the evening provided an opportunity to reflect, recognise and celebrate the individuals who made a lasting impact in Amber.

Opoku


Nathaniel Opoku finished as Newport County’s leading scorer, claiming the golden boot with six goals.

Arriving on loan from Leicester City, Opoku quickly gave Newport County a different dimension in attack. His pace, direct running and instinct inside the box provided a focal point, particularly during key moments of the season. His opener in the vital home win over Harrogate Town remains one of the defining contributions of the campaign.

Despite an untimely injury cutting his season short, his tally remained unmatched. The club thanks Nathaniel for his efforts and wishes him well as he returns to Leicester City.

Thomas


Joe Thomas’ stunning strike against Harrogate Town was voted Goal of the Season, receiving 35% of the vote from supporters.

In a moment that combined technique, confidence and timing, Thomas collected the ball outside the area, shifted onto his right foot and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner. In a season where fine margins proved decisive, it was a goal that delivered when it mattered most.

Spellman


Michael Spellman was voted the Amber Army’s Player of the Season, securing 22% of the vote.

The forward’s impact grew as the campaign progressed, becoming a consistent attacking threat during the second half of the season. With five goals to his name, Spellman’s energy, directness and willingness to take responsibility in key moments stood out.

Standout displays in victories over Chesterfield and Tranmere Rovers, along with two Goal of the Season nominations, reflected his influence despite injury challenges late in the campaign.

Bobby Kamwa’s last-gasp winner against Oldham Athletic was named Moment of the Season.

Introduced after voting had closed, the award recognised a moment that captured the drama of the season. After seeing a penalty saved deep into stoppage time, Kamwa responded in remarkable fashion.

In the 118th minute, a clever flick from Cole Jarvis sent him through on goal, and he showed composure to finish and spark unforgettable scenes at Rodney Parade. From frustration to elation in a matter of minutes, it was a moment that defined belief, resilience and togetherness.

Sprangler


Sven Sprangler was named Manager’s Player of the Season after making a powerful impact following his January arrival on loan from St Johnstone.

Dropping straight into the midfield, Sprangler brought intensity, aggression and a relentless appetite for the physical side of the game. Time and again, he put himself in the right place to win second balls, make crucial interceptions or throw his body into challenges others might shy away from.

His presence added balance and bite, allowing those around him to play with greater freedom. In a short space of time, he became a key figure in the side, earning the recognition of manager Christian Fuchs and his staff. The club thanks Sven for his commitment and wishes him the best as he returns to Scotland.

Ben Lloyd was awarded Young Player of the Season following an impressive loan spell from Swansea City.

The 21-year-old’s development across the campaign was clear to see. What began as a promising addition quickly evolved into a player taking on responsibility in big moments.

From his contribution in the FA Cup against Gillingham to his crucial equaliser against Oldham that helped spark a dramatic comeback, Lloyd showed composure under pressure. Whether deployed out wide, centrally or deeper, he consistently delivered energy and quality.

His performances, attitude and willingness to embrace the challenge made him a standout, with several player of the match displays underlining his influence.

Matt Baker was voted Players’ Player of the Season by his teammates.

The captain led by example throughout, recording the most minutes played in Amber and anchoring the defence with consistency and composure. Despite his age, Baker has already surpassed 100 appearances for Newport County, underlining both his reliability and importance to the squad.

A calm presence at the back, he combines strong defensive instincts with the ability to play from the back when required. To be recognised by his teammates highlights the respect he commands within the dressing room and the standards he sets on a daily basis.

Lee Jenkins was named Supporters Trust Player of the Season, a reflection of his wholehearted commitment throughout the campaign.

Described as a player who leaves everything on the pitch, Jenkins’ performances have been defined by bravery and determination. Time and again, he has put his body on the line for the team, whether through last-ditch challenges, aerial duels or sheer physical resilience.

In his debut season, he has quickly become a favourite among supporters, embodying the passion and effort that the Amber Army values so highly.

 

The evening served as a reminder of the unity and character within the group, as Newport County secured its place in the Football League once again.
