Newport County can confirm that goalkeeper Nick Townsend has left the club to take up another opportunity.

Townsend, who was offered a new contract at Rodney Parade after his current deal expired at the end of last season, ends a successful seven-year spell with the Exiles.

An Antigua and Barbuda international, Townsend joined the club in August 2018 following a three-year stint with Barnsley.

He went on to make 209 appearances for the club and became a fans’ favourite, winning the club’s Supporters Player of the Year in the last two season.

Speaking after making his 200th appearance against Harrogate in March, Townsend, 30, said: "The fans have been incredible. This club has a real community feel about it. You can sense how much the city is behind the team. Whether you’re here for two weeks or ten years, they just want the best for you. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed.’’

Newport County would like to thank Nick for his service, commitment and dedication over the last seven years and wish him well with his new challenge.

Meanwhile, manager David Hughes has been prioritising a replacement and the club has already agreed personal terms with a new number one, due to be announced in due course.
