Sammy Braybrooke Wins Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month for December

Braybrooke

Newport County are pleased to announce that Sammy Braybrooke has been named the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner for December.

The Leicester City midfielder scored the award-winning strike during his loan spell with Newport, in the December 20 fixture against Colchester United. Positioned ten yards inside his own half, Braybrooke intercepted a pass and unleashed an audacious 55-yard lob, sending the ball perfectly under the crossbar.

Speaking about the award, Braybrooke said: “It feels good to win the award. I might have seen it coming a little bit! I'm over the moon and hopefully I can get one or two more. Scoring goals has never been a massive strength in my game, but I'm always looking to get shots off from the edge of the box because I believe in my quality, so hopefully there'll be more to come.”

Sky Sports pundit and lead Goal of the Month judge Don Goodman described the strike as “one of the best long-range lobs you’re ever likely to see. Sammy Braybrooke was a good 10 yards in his own half, and the keeper didn’t seem that far off his line, making a valiant attempt to get back but it didn’t matter. Braybrooke’s effort was hit with pace, and it dropped so perfectly under the crossbar it grazed it on its way in.”

Braybrooke beat competition from Port Vale’s Ethon Archer, Accrington Stanley’s Benn Ward, and Bristol Rovers’ Jack Sparkes. The winners were decided by a combination of public vote and a panel of Sky Sports’ EFL experts, including Don Goodman and David Prutton.

The strike remains a standout moment from Braybrooke’s loan spell with Newport. He will now return to Rodney Parade this Saturday with Chesterfield, facing the side where he produced his award-winning goal.

Congratulations Sammy.
