Shaq Interview

Newport County striker Shaquille Gwengwe says he is “buzzing” to begin life at Rodney Parade after completing his move to the club ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The forward arrives in South Wales following a standout campaign with Poole Town, where he scored 47 goals in all competitions and collected both the Southern League Golden Boot and National Game Awards Golden Boot.

Speaking in his first interview as a Newport County player, Gwengwe said the move has been a long time coming and is ready to get started.

“I'm buzzing to be here. It's been a long time coming, if I'm being honest. I'm happy it's all done and I'm here now.”

Gwengwe’s remarkable goalscoring return last season marked a major breakthrough in his career, and the striker says it is the result of hard work paying off.

“To score 47 goals in a year is a big achievement. I'm proud of myself for that. It comes from the hard work I've put in, and now I'm reaping the rewards.”

Known for his direct style and attacking threat, the 47-goal forward is eager to show supporters what he can bring to Newport County.

“I'm hardworking and exciting. I like to get fans off their seats. But most importantly, as a striker, it's about goals. It doesn't matter how they come, just goals.”

The 47-goal striker now steps into the EFL for the first time, and says he is ready to embrace the challenge ahead.

“I feel like I'm making a jump up in levels, but it's because of the work I've put in. Now it's happened, I'm ready to take it on and show what I'm about. I'm thankful to Newport County for giving me this opportunity and I'll do everything I can to repay that.”

Gwengwe also highlighted the atmosphere at Rodney Parade and the club’s identity as key reasons behind his decision to join.

“Coming up and visiting, the environment stood out straight away. The fans are unbelievable. It's a hardworking, working-class club with a real family feel. It felt like the right place for me.”

With the new season approaching, Gwengwe is already looking forward to meeting the supporters for the first time in amber.

“I can't wait to see them all soon. Especially the first game of the season, I can't wait to be celebrating with the Amber Army. It's going to be fun.”
