As Newport County prepare to face Fleetwood Town this Saturday, we take a look back at players who have worn the shirts of both clubs.
Ged Garner
Ged Garner is currently part of the Newport County squad, but before arriving at Rodney Parade this season he spent several years with Fleetwood Town.
Garner progressed through Fleetwood’s academy before earning promotion to the first team. During his time with the Fishermen, he made 78 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing three assists.
While contracted to Fleetwood, he also gained valuable experience on loan at Southport, Bamber Bridge, FC United of Manchester and Gateshead.
The forward joined the Exiles this season from Barrow and has featured regularly, making 19 appearances so far and providing a consistent attacking presence in the squad.
Ben Davies
Ben Davies, who currently plays for Oxford United, has enjoyed a career that has included spells with Preston North End, Birmingham City and Rangers. He has also represented both Newport County and Fleetwood Town.
Davies first joined the Exiles in 2016 from Preston and played a key role during the second half of the campaign, making 20 appearances as Newport secured their League Two status.
Following his time in South Wales, the defender joined Fleetwood on loan in 2017 for the remainder of the season. Once again, he proved an important figure, helping Fleetwood secure a League One play-off place.
Lee Fowler
Lee Fowler, now manager of Flint Town United, also represented both clubs during his playing career.
The two-time Welsh champion joined Newport from Burton Albion and was part of the side that lifted the FAW Premier Cup in 2007/08, defeating Llanelli 1–0 in the final.
Fowler later signed for Fleetwood during the 2011/12 season, contributing to their National League title-winning campaign that secured a return to the Football League. He went on to make 10 League Two appearances for the club.
