As we welcome Shrewsbury Town to Rodney Parade this Saturday, let's look back at past players who have shared the shirt between Newport County and The Shrews.
Aaron Wildig
Aaron Wildig, who currently plays for Gloucester City has enjoyed lengthy stints at both Shrewsbury and Newport.
Wildig first joined The Shrews on loan from Cardiff in 2011 and at the end of the season he would go and join the club permanently. The midfielder played in four league campaigns with his most impressive season being in 2013/14 as he featured 30 times, scoring twice and getting an assist. However, all time, Wildig made 71 appearances, scoring six goals and one assist whilst playing in League One and League Two.
However, after leaving Shrewsbury for Morecambe, Wildig would eventually find his way to Newport in the summer of 2022. During his time at the club the midfielder made 90 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists. Wildig also became captain at the start of the 2024 season but would miss most of the season due to injury.
Glyn Thompson
Glyn Thompson currently works as an academy goalkeeper coordinator at Leicester City but was once a goalkeeper for Shrewsbury and Newport.
The Shrewsbury-born keeper came through their academy before leaving for Fulham but had multiple stints at the club. Despite having multiple seasons at the club, Thompson only featured in one game which was a 3-0 defeat in the League Cup against Sheffield United.
Although for County, Thompson would make multiple appearances between 2007 and 2012. Thompson was part of the record-breaking team that would win the Conference South with 103 points, as well as featuring in the FA Trophy final at Wembley in which York City would defeat The Exiles 2-0.
Darren Jones
Darren Jones, who is the current manager of Caldicot, joined Newport in 2004 before later playing for The Shrews.
Jones had multiple seasons at Newport, joining the club three times throughout his career. The defender made 99 appearances during his time at the club and was a regular starter, helping The Exiles avoid relegation twice as well as helping them come ninth, just shy of a playoff position.
The Newport-born defender joined Shrewsbury in the summer of 2012 from Aldershot and stayed there for a season and a half. During his time at the club, he made 57 appearances, mainly in League One. Jones also scored his only goal for The Shrews against Coventry City.
