Player Biography

James Clarke continues to be a bedrock of Newport County’s defence, having signed a one year contract extension in June 2025 to remain at Rodney Parade until the summer of 2026. A model of leadership both on and off the pitch, Clarke was retained for his invaluable experience after helping the club maintain its Football League status.

Born on 17 November 1989 in Aylesbury, Clarke began his career in Watford’s youth setup before progressing through Oxford United, Oxford City, Salisbury City and Woking. In 2015 he joined Bristol Rovers, where he contributed to their promotion to League One, before later spending two seasons with Walsall. He arrived at Newport County in June 2021 and quickly became a trusted and experienced figure within the squad.

Ahead of the 2024–25 campaign Clarke was appointed club captain by first team coach Nelson Jardim, entrusted with leading the side through their League Two season. He went on to score twice across 26 appearances in all competitions and his consistent performances were recognised at the club’s End of Season Awards, where he was named Manager’s Player of the Season.

With his professionalism, defensive acumen and leadership qualities, James Clarke remains a vital figure for Newport County both as a guiding presence and as a dependable centre half.
