Player Biography

James Clarke joined Newport County in June 2021, bringing a wealth of Football League experience to Rodney Parade. A solid and versatile defender, Clarke has proven himself as a key figure in the Exiles' backline, known for his leadership, composure, and ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.

Clarke began his career at Oxford United in 2007 and later played for Oxford City, Salisbury City, and Woking, establishing himself as a reliable defender. In 2015, he signed for Bristol Rovers, where he played an important role in their promotion to League One, making several key appearances during their successful 3rd-place finish in League Two. Clarke spent four years at Bristol Rovers, including a memorable start to the 2018–19 season where he scored his first professional goal in a 2–1 win over Wycombe Wanderers.

Following his spell at Bristol Rovers, Clarke joined Walsall in 2019, where his performances earned him the League Two Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards in September of the same year. After two years at Walsall, Clarke moved to Newport County on a one-year deal. He made an immediate impact, scoring his first goal for the Exiles with a dramatic 87th-minute winner against his former club Walsall, assisted by his ex-Walsall teammate Cameron Norman.
