Matt Smith joined Newport County in July 2025 on a two-year contract following a successful spell at Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone. The Welsh international midfielder brings a wealth of experience from across the EFL and abroad.
Born on 22 November 1999 in Redditch, England, Smith began his football journey at West Bromwich Albion's youth academy before moving to Manchester City's academy in 2013. His first taste of senior football came at Dutch club FC Twente at the age of 18 on a season-long loan from City, where he made 37 appearances and helped the club clinch promotion to the Eredivisie.
Smith's career has seen him play for several clubs, including Queens Park Rangers, Charlton Athletic, Hull City, Doncaster Rovers, MK Dons, Salford City, and St Johnstone. At St Johnstone, he made 60 appearances before his move to Newport County.
Internationally, Smith has represented Wales at various youth levels, including U17, U19, and U21, before making his full debut in 2018. He has earned 19 caps for the national team.
Since joining Newport County, Smith has made several appearances, contributing to the team's midfield strength. His experience and leadership qualities have been valuable assets to the squad.
