Player Biography

Ged Garner joined Newport County in June 2025, signing a two-year contract following the expiration of his deal with Barrow. The powerful forward arrived at Rodney Parade with extensive EFL experience and a reputation for his aerial ability, physicality and intelligent movement across the front line.

Born on November 2, 1998 in Liverpool, Garner began his career with Fleetwood Town, progressing through the club's academy before making his senior debut in 2018. He gained valuable experience through loan spells with Southport, Bamber Bridge, FC United of Manchester and Gateshead, developing his game in both the National League and National League North.

Garner went on to make 78 appearances for Fleetwood Town, scoring 15 goals and providing three assists. His performances earned him a move to Barrow in January 2023, with the club paying a record transfer fee to secure his services.

During his two seasons with Barrow, Garner made 50 appearances and scored seven goals. He also spent two spells on loan with Morecambe, gaining further League Two experience before returning to Barrow for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.

Garner joined Newport County ahead of the 2025-26 season and made his competitive debut in the EFL Cup preliminary round against Barnet on July 29, 2025. He scored his first Newport County goal on his League Two debut four days later, finding the net in a 1-1 draw with Notts County.

The forward featured regularly during his first season at Rodney Parade, making 29 appearances across all competitions and scoring two goals. His second Newport County goal came during the season as he continued to provide a physical presence and experienced option in attack.

Garner's ability to bring teammates into play was also an important part of his contribution. He is comfortable dropping into deeper areas to link play, while his strength and aerial ability allow him to provide an effective focal point for Newport County's attack. He has described his own game as being based around getting involved in play, creating chances and finishing opportunities.

Now 27, Garner heads into the 2026-27 season with more than 200 senior appearances and extensive experience of English football. His versatility means he can operate as a central striker or in a slightly deeper attacking role, giving Newport County another experienced option in the final third.
