Forward Nathaniel Opoku joined Newport County on loan from Leicester City in September 2025, with his deal later extended until the end of the 2025–26 season.

Born on 22 July 2001 in Ghana, Opoku began his football journey with FDM Field Masters, where he developed his early game before moving to the United States to further his career.

Opoku enjoyed a prolific spell in college soccer, first at Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky, where he scored 19 goals and provided five assists in just 19 matches during the 2021 season. He then transferred to Syracuse University and quickly established himself as one of the standout forwards in the NCAA. During the 2022 campaign, he registered 11 goals and eight assists in 25 appearances and played a key role in Syracuse winning the NCAA Division I National Championship, scoring in the final before victory on penalties against Indiana. His performances earned him Third-Team All-America honours, a place in the All-ACC First Team and recognition as the NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

In 2022, Opoku also featured for Ventura County Fusion in USL League Two, scoring 11 goals in 16 appearances and helping the side lift the league title, where he was named MVP in the championship game.

His form attracted European interest, and in January 2023 he signed for Premier League side Leicester City before joining Belgian club OH Leuven on loan. He scored his first league goal in April 2023 and continued to gain valuable senior experience in Belgium. In April 2024, he suffered a serious double leg fracture but worked his way back to full fitness.

Opoku joined the Exiles on 1 September 2025 and made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut as a substitute in a 3–2 home fixture against Bristol Rovers. His loan was extended in January 2026 to keep him at Rodney Parade for the remainder of the season.
