Republic of Ireland defender Ryan Delaney rejoined Newport County on loan from Swindon Town in January 2026 for the remainder of the 2025–26 season, marking his second spell at Rodney Parade.

Born on 6 September 1996, Delaney began his senior career with Wexford, making his debut in 2014. He played a key role as the club won promotion in 2015 and continued to impress in the League of Ireland Premier Division before earning a move to Championship side Burton Albion in 2016.

A loan spell at Cork City in 2017 proved hugely successful, as Delaney became a central figure in a side that won both the League of Ireland Premier Division and the FAI Cup, completing a historic domestic double. His performances earned him the club’s Player of the Month award during that campaign.

Delaney moved to Rochdale in January 2018, making his debut in the FA Cup against Millwall, and later signed a contract extension to remain at the club until 2021. He gained further experience during a loan spell with AFC Wimbledon, where he scored in a 4–1 win over Southend United.

In January 2020, Delaney joined Bolton Wanderers, scoring in a 2–2 draw against former club Burton Albion. After a spell with Morecambe, where he made his debut in the club’s first-ever League One campaign, he also featured on loan for Scunthorpe United.

Delaney first signed permanently for Newport County in July 2023 and quickly established himself as a commanding presence in defence. He made his debut against Accrington Stanley and scored his first goal for the Exiles in a 4–2 Boxing Day victory over Forest Green Rovers.

Following a move to Swindon Town in June 2024, Delaney returned to Rodney Parade on loan in January 2026 and made his second debut against Gillingham.

An uncompromising and dominant centre back, Delaney brings leadership, aerial strength and valuable EFL experience to the County back line.

At international level, he has represented the Republic of Ireland Under-21s, making his debut in a European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan.
