Player Biography

Shaquille Gwengwe joined Newport County in June 2026, signing from Poole Town following a remarkable 2025-26 season in which he scored 46 goals in 46 appearances. The powerful forward arrives at Rodney Parade as one of non-league football's most prolific goalscorers, having earned a reputation for his finishing, physicality and ability to lead the line.

Born in Malawi, Gwengwe began his footballing journey with Worthing, Blackfield & Langley and Andover Town before establishing himself as a prolific goalscorer in the non-league pyramid.

In the 2021-22 season, Gwengwe joined AFC Totton and made an immediate impact, scoring 15 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions. He subsequently joined Dorchester Town, where he continued to develop his goalscoring record.

Gwengwe won Dorchester Town's golden boot during his first season at the club after scoring 13 goals. He followed that with 17 goals the following campaign before scoring a further 10 goals during the 2024-25 season.

In June 2025, Gwengwe joined Poole Town and enjoyed a sensational first and only season with the club. He scored 46 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions, helping establish himself as one of the standout goalscorers in the non-league game. His goals included a club-record 42 in 41 league appearances, while he also contributed two assists.

Gwengwe's goalscoring form continued throughout the campaign, reaching 21 league goals before Christmas and ultimately finishing as Poole Town's leading scorer. He scored his 41st league goal on the final day of the regular season against Uxbridge, ensuring he finished as the division's leading scorer.

His remarkable campaign attracted significant interest from clubs across the football pyramid, with Newport County ultimately securing his signature in June 2026. The move represents the next step in the 25-year-old's career and his first opportunity to test himself in the English Football League.

Gwengwe made his name through his ability to consistently find the back of the net, but his game extends beyond finishing. His strength, movement and ability to occupy defenders provide Newport County with a different attacking option, while his record demonstrates his natural instinct in front of goal.

Having scored 101 goals across his spells with AFC Totton, Dorchester Town and Poole Town, Gwengwe arrives at Newport County with a proven record of scoring regularly at non-league level. He will now look to translate that form to League Two and establish himself as an important part of the Newport County attack during the 2026-27 season.
