Alfie Merritt joined Newport County in the summer of 2026 on loan from AFC Bournemouth, with the young left-back arriving at Rodney Parade to gain valuable senior experience during the 2026-27 season.
Born on May 30, 2008 in Winchester, Merritt developed through the AFC Bournemouth academy after joining the club in 2024. The left-footed defender progressed through the Cherries' youth system and made his first steps into senior football during the 2025-26 campaign.
Merritt spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan with AFC Totton in the National League South. He made 13 league appearances, starting all 13 matches, and scored once during his spell. He made his debut against Hornchurch in February 2026 and produced a man-of-the-match performance on his first appearance.
His performances at Totton provided Merritt with his first sustained experience of senior men's football and represented an important step in his development. He also featured for Bournemouth's development sides during the season, including six appearances in the Premier League Cup.
Merritt signed his first professional contract with AFC Bournemouth in May 2026 after an impressive season, underlining the club's belief in his potential.
Still only 18, Merritt arrives at Newport County with the opportunity to continue his development in League Two. His pace, energy and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch make him an exciting young defensive option, while his experience of regular senior football with Totton will provide a valuable foundation as he adapts to the demands of the EFL.
