Ciarán Brennan became a Newport County AFC player in July 2024, signing a two-year deal to bring his versatile defensive skills to Rodney Parade. Known for his ability to play both as a centre-back and full-back, Brennan adds depth and experience to the Exiles’ squad as they aim for success in EFL League Two.
Born on 5th May 2000, Brennan’s football journey began at Sheffield Wednesday, where he joined the academy in 2013 and rose through the youth ranks. He signed his first professional contract in 2018 and made his senior debut in September 2020 in an EFL Cup match against Rochdale. Brennan's consistent performances earned him a regular spot in the first team before leaving the club in 2024.
Throughout his time at Sheffield Wednesday, Brennan gained valuable experience during loan spells with Gainsborough Trinity, Notts County, Swindon Town, and Hartlepool United. His loan stint at Swindon, though shortened by a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023, was particularly impactful, helping him grow as a reliable and adaptable defender.
On the international stage, Brennan received a call-up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad in May 2021, highlighting his potential. Although he had to withdraw from the squad due to illness, the experience remains a testament to his talent and ambition.
Brennan made his Newport County debut on 10th August 2024 in a League Two match against Cheltenham Town. With his strong defensive attributes and ability to contribute in multiple positions, Brennan is poised to be an important part of Newport County’s defensive lineup moving forward.
