Player Biography

Ciaran Brennan joined Newport County in June 2024, signing a two-year contract after leaving Sheffield Wednesday. The Republic of Ireland defender arrived at Rodney Parade with experience of League Two football and the versatility to operate at centre-back or across the wider defensive positions.

Born on May 5, 2000 in Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland, Brennan joined Sheffield Wednesday's academy in 2013 and progressed through the club's youth system before signing his first professional contract in 2018. He made his senior debut in September 2020, starting in an EFL Cup tie against Rochdale.

Brennan gained valuable senior experience through loan spells with Gainsborough Trinity, Notts County, Swindon Town and Hartlepool United. His most productive loan spell came with Swindon Town during the 2022-23 season, when he made 21 appearances across all competitions in League Two. He also made 11 first-team appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.

Brennan made his Newport County debut on August 10, 2024, starting in a League Two fixture away at Cheltenham Town. He went on to make 27 League Two appearances during his first season at Rodney Parade, with 31 appearances across all competitions.

The 2025-26 campaign saw Brennan make a further 23 League Two appearances, playing 1,099 minutes. He started 10 league matches and also featured in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and EFL Trophy, taking his total appearances across all competitions to 29. He finished the season without a goal or assist and recorded two yellow cards.

Brennan's campaign included an important return to the starting XI after recovering from a shoulder injury. He played 90 minutes in Newport County's 2-1 victory away at Barrow on the final day of the season, helping the club finish the campaign with a victory.

Away from the pitch, Brennan was recognised for his contribution to the local community during the 2025-26 season. He was named Newport County's County in the Community PFA Community Champion, recognising his work supporting local initiatives, visiting schools and taking part in community sessions throughout the campaign.

Standing at 1.89 metres (6'2"), the right-footed defender or midfielder provides physical presence and versatility. His previous experience in League Two, combined with his ability to play in multiple defensive positions, makes him a valuable option for the squad.

At international level, Brennan has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-18 and under-19 level and was later called up to the under-21 squad in 2021.

Following the signing of a contract extension in June 2026, Brennan remains at Rodney Parade for the 2026-27 season and will look to build on his first two campaigns with Newport County.
