Ciarán Brennan joined Newport County in July 2024, signing a two-year contract that will keep him at Rodney Parade until the summer of 2026. He arrived from Sheffield Wednesday with a reputation for versatility, able to perform effectively as both a centre-back and full-back, offering much-needed defensive depth to the Exiles’ squad.
Born on 5 May 2000 in Kilkenny, Ireland, Brennan began his footballing journey at Sheffield Wednesday’s academy in 2013 and signed his first professional contract in 2018. He made his senior debut in September 2020 in an EFL Cup match against Rochdale and went on to make eleven first-team appearances for the club.
During his time with Sheffield Wednesday, Brennan gained valuable experience through loan spells at Gainsborough Trinity, Notts County, Swindon Town and Hartlepool United. His loan at Swindon was cut short by a season-ending shoulder injury in early 2023, but he returned strongly thereafter.
Ciarán made his Newport debut on 10 August 2024 in a League Two fixture away at Cheltenham Town. He went on to become a regular part of the defence over the 2024–25 season, featuring in 27 league matches and making 31 appearances in all competitions without scoring. He is a right-footed defender standing 1.89 m tall, often deployed in central defence with the ability to cover multiple defensive roles.
On the international stage, Brennan has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-18 and under-19 levels, and later received a call-up to the under-21 squad in May 2021, though he was forced to withdraw due to illness.
With a blend of academy pedigree, loan-acquired experience and adaptability, Ciarán Brennan has firmly established himself within Newport County’s defensive line and looks set to continue developing as a key member of their backline.
