Player Biography

Cameron Evans joined Newport County in July 2024, signing a two-year contract after impressing during spells in non-league and the Irish leagues. The versatile defender has established himself as an important member of the Newport County squad, capable of operating across the backline and further forward when required.

Born on February 23, 2001 in Swansea, Wales, Evans developed through Swansea City's academy before making his senior debut in an EFL Cup tie in January 2021. He subsequently gained valuable first-team experience with Waterford in the League of Ireland, making 30 league appearances during the 2021 season. He later spent time with Sligo Rovers before joining Taunton Town, where he became a regular during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.

Evans joined Newport County in the summer of 2024 and made his competitive debut in the EFL Cup against Leyton Orient. He quickly became an important part of the side and scored his first Newport County goal in September 2024, producing a memorable long-range strike in a 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra.

The 2025-26 season saw Evans continue to develop and demonstrate his versatility. Originally a defender, he was regularly used in midfield and right-back roles during the campaign, with manager David Hughes praising his energy and ability to adapt to different positions. He was also named in the League Two Team of the Week following Newport County's impressive 3-0 victory away at Harrogate Town in October 2025.

Evans made a particularly memorable contribution in the Emirates FA Cup against Gillingham in November 2025, scoring Newport County's equaliser in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Rodney Parade before County progressed 4-3 on penalties. He lifted the ball high into the net from close range after sustained pressure from a series of Joe Thomas corners.

He also scored in the 3-0 home victory over Harrogate Town in March 2025, his third goal of that campaign, demonstrating the attacking contribution he can provide from defensive positions.

Across the 2025-26 season, Evans featured regularly for Newport County, providing an adaptable option across the defensive line and midfield. His ability to step into midfield, contribute from set pieces and provide quality deliveries from wide areas added another dimension to the Newport County squad.

Standing at 1.82 metres (6'0"), the right-footed defender has developed into a versatile and dependable player who can operate at right-back, centre-back or in midfield. His technical quality, athleticism and willingness to contribute in both boxes have made him a valuable member of the squad.

Evans remains with Newport County heading into the 2026-27 season, with the club confirming in May 2026 that discussions were ongoing regarding a new contract.

At international level, Evans has represented Wales at under-19 level, earning nine caps. He will be looking to build on his first two seasons at Rodney Parade and continue his development as an established EFL player.
