Tommy Tynan
Tommy Tynan was inducted into the Hall of Fame on 3rd April 2009 and was the 1st player to do so.
Regarded as our most iconic star, Liverpudlian Tommy, signed for a club record £25,000 in February 1979. He went on to score 88 goals in 229 appearances, before leaving for Plymouth in August 1983, where he as also been named as their greatest ever player.
1979/80 became the most successful in our history. Known as the Season of Triumph’, Tommy played a major role in us winning promotion for the first time since 1939 and the Welsh Cup for the only time in our history.
Promotion was achieved on the last day at Walsall, who also went up. Tommy memorably scored our clinching final goal in our 4-2 win. Lifting the Welsh Cup was finished with Home and Away victories in the Final
over Shrewsbury, who were two Divisions higher. Tommy scored both goals in our 2-1 win at Somerton Park and another in our 3-0 clincher at Gay Meadow.
That success saw us in the 1980/81 European Cup Winners’ Cup. That competition’s Rounds were also played over 2 Legs. Tommy scored two in our 6-0 victory at Somerton over Norway’s Haugar with us then in the Quarter-Final against the East German giants of the time, Carl Zeiss Jena. Tommy’s name became Internationally known, scoring both our goals in the 1st Leg’s 2-2 draw. He was extremely close to also scoring in the return at Somerton; when we were desperately unlucky not to go through to the semi-finals.
1980/81 ended with Tommy being awarded as our ‘Player of the Season.’
1982/83 saw Tommy also play an enormous role in our near-miss promotion campaign to the old 2nd Division (currently the championship.) He set a post-war scoring record for us, that also saw him the joint top scorer in the Football League.
Tommy then sadly left for a club record sale at that time of £55,000.
