Newport County won their opening game of the season against Rochdale, as the new signings were given the chance to impress the home faithful including Alfie Merritt.
Merritt came on in the 65th minute when County were 2-0 up which took some of the pressure off the loanee.
“I think credit to the boys. They were on it from the first minute. And yeah, coming on 2-0 up took the pressure off.
“Got on the ball, probably should have done better with a few chances. But you know, it's a really good experience, hopefully we can kick on for the rest of the season now.”
This wasn’t Merritt’s first game at Rodney Parade however as he started as a trialist against Roma last week.
“Yeah, I mean, that game was unbelievable. The fans were very good.
“You know, I was marking Dybala, so yeah, very good experience. And again, I thought the boys were topping that again.
“So, I think more to come for us for the season. But yeah, just buzzing to be here as well to be fair.”
After progressing through Bournemouth’s academy Merritt moved to Totton for his first look at senior football and after impressing, he made the step up this season to EFL football.
“I spoke to Toddy and Hayden as well. And I think it's just, you know, a really good club for me. Good level, good group.
“I think, you know, I think we're going to do really well this season. So yeah, perfect place for me to come, you know, get experience in men's football, get experience in this league.
“Hopefully I can come in and help get the team where they want to be in the season”
In the past young players like Antoine Semenyo and Ben White among many others learnt valuable lessons with the Exiles allowing them to progress to the very top and Merritt is hoping to follow in their footsteps.
“I've heard the players that have been out. And, you know, hopefully I'll get to that level one day.
“But, you know, it's all part of the experience. And I know, work hard, keep growing and then hopefully I'll get to that level. But if not, you know, I'll do the best I can at whatever level I get to.”
After a near perfect start to the season County will want to continue their positive performance and carry it on for the rest of the season and Merritt understands what is wanted from him.
“I had a sit down with him the other day, just had an honest chat. I asked a few questions about what he wants from me, what he wants from the team.
“So now I've got a good understanding of what he wants. And now it's just down to me, you know, go on the pitch and do what he wants.”
