COUNTY'S FA CUP DREAMS DETONATED : BOREHAM WOOD 3, NEWPORT COUNTY 0

Any hopes County had of enhancing their reputation of being amongst the most feared FA Cup giant-killers outside the Football League's top three tiers, exploded in their faces on the outskirts of North London.

Sweet memories of shaking Leeds, Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Tottenham and Manchester United, evaporated in the autumn rain, as a trio of Boreham grenades exploded into their net either side of the break - Jake King, Regan Booty and prolific hit-man Matt Rush doing maximum damage inside 26 devastating minutes.

The carnage might have been greater but for Exiles' Kiwi stopper Nik Tzanev's athleticism. Yet battered Port will rue a clutch of guilt-edge chances spurned before Boreham had even thrown a meaningful punch.

Winger Bobby Kamwa, Gerard Garner and on-loan Leicester City raider Nathan Opoku were all frustrated as the Wood clung on, only for them to spring cobra-like to emit their deadly vengeance with fatal consequence.

The defeat means County will now have no interest with ball 51 in Monday night's Third Round draw and will now focus on the trip to Crewe on Wednesday night - the start of a gruelling schedule that will see the Port play seven vital League Two matches in 25 days.

With the priority clearly league stability, the Exiles were extensively altered from the line-up so unfortunate not to beat Barrow at Rodney Parade eight days earlier. County face seven vital fixtures in just 25 days, incorporating the trip to Crewe next Wednesday night.

Newport's management restored New Zealand international Tzanev, one of seven changes which saw Ciaran Brennan coming into the back four as skipper, with Habeeb Ogunneye and Tom Davies at right and left-back respectively. Ben Lloyd slotted into midfield, with maverick linkman Kai Whitmore supporting an attack led by Garner and Opoku.

National Conference high-flyers Boreham, only five rungs down on the Football League ladder from the Exiles, recalled fit-again seven-goal talisman Abdul Abdulmalik from the start - one of three alterations which also saw midfielder Booty and Joe Newton return.

Heavy showers had a slicked the surface at the start of a clash which had attracted the glare of the National Media - TNT Sport, BBC Two, Discovery Talk Sport and BBC Wales all present under the leaden skies.

The Amber Army had made their way along the M4, via the M25 and were packed into the West Stand, also bravely huddled into the open South Terrace.

Boreham, who had reached the Fifth Round of British soccer's oldest competition in 2022, had won five out of six games coming into this one. The hosts, expecting to dominate possession, were probing at County in the early exchanges.

Yet Port so nearly stung the Wood with sharp counter on 12 minutes. Sammy Braybrooke advanced swiftly after robbing Booty to feed Opoku. The quick-silver forward, touched on for Bobby Kamwa - the Cameroon wide man's blast deflecting clear off Callum Reynolds' leg.

Boreham swayed again three minutes later. Whitmore's guile took him around Joe Newton, the hosts indebted to teenage stopper Ted Curd acrobatics, who beat back Garner's powerful drive.

Newport were again troubling confident Boreham on 24 minutes. Davies and Kamwa weaved brilliance on the left, Opoku cursed as he saw a right-footer cannon off the base of a post with on-loan Chelsea gloveman Curd clearly beaten.

The spurned opportunities were to haunt County as they caved in twice within three minutes after the half hour. The searing pace of Erica Sousa and Abdulmalik trickery had been so evident earlier, of course - Charlie O'Connor nodding one opening after the former had supplied deep in the area.

Yet Boreham were ahead in the 33rd minute. Newport failed to nullify the danger sparked by Abdulmalik's wizardry, defender King spearing into the far corner with a crisp right-footer - the on-loan York man's 26th goal in 220 appearances.

There was more anguish for the Exiles ten minutes from the break. Sousa lost Kamwa and chasing Davies before intricately squaring for Booty to lift his point-blank finish into the roof of the net.

County were clinging on grimly as Zak Brunt started adding his menace. It might have got worse on 43 minutes, Christian Fuchs' men struggling to clear another King set piece, Booty's blasted headed off the line by Brennan with Tzanev rooted.

This tie was truly wrapped up on 58 minutes, of course. Latching onto Sousa's pass, Rush sped through County's midfield to emphatically net from 12 yards - the former Sutton striker's 31st goal in his 50th Boreham game.

The margin of defeat might have been wider in truth as Boreham white shirts buzzed around mercilessly - Tzanev pulled into action once more as the time ebbed away.
