CREWE MATCH PREVIEW: COUNTY UP THE JUNCTION, SEEKING A RAIL TRACK TO PLATFORM REDEMPTION

The Exiles stop at one of the most infamous UK rail junctions on Wednesday night - willing their derailed League Two journey to get back on track writes Anthony Rees.

Crewe's Gresty Road, AKA the Mornflake Stadium, has been a station for joy in the past for County, who now seek a ticket to ride - toward redemption in a campaign that has seen much dislocation.

This is the third league match in for the Christian Fuchs-Mark Smith management era. The duo are burning the midnight oil in a quest to lever Newport off the section trap door.

Hopes of survival were boosted  coming into the clash with the Port's relegation rivals all losing on Tuesday - the exception was Cheltenham, who edged Swindon 1-0 in a derby. A win for the Exiles at Crewe followed by three more points against Fleetwood on Saturday could lift County clear of the bottom two by 17.00 on the day.

Mindful that County now begin a frantic sequence of seven matches in 25 days, boss Fuchs, protecting his squad, fielding a much-altered team, detonated 3-0 in the FA Cup Second Round at National Conference Boreham Wood last Sunday - the TNT Sports, BBC Two, Discovery and Talk Sport sages dissecting a passive display.

Up next then, play-off contenders Crewe, who the Exiles have beaten twice in their last three visits to Cheshire. The Railwaymen are in striking distance of the promotion shake up, although they are without a win in four league and cup games.

County number two Smith sees the fixture as simply part of an overall equation. The Exiles have 28 League Two dates remaining of a fixture list that ends at Barrow's Holker Street in early May.

The highly-rated Malpas-raised former Crystal Palace coach said, "Getting our playing strategy across will be very much a gradual thing at Newport. The way we play now will not be the style and philosophy that would be adopted in the years to come. It is clear what the priority is at this moment, we will work toward that."

After a trip to Crewe, County move toward a Festive Season that begins in earnest with the clash against Fleetwood at Rodney Parade this Saturday.

Newport have been 24st in the Football League's fourth tier for just under two months. Smith knows County's salvation might well be reversing a home trend that has seen them winless in the league on their own patch for 273 days.

He said, "We've chatted with the players at length about this. Things will turn, I will say that now. I am confident that  results will correct "

The Exiles Christmas hand will be boosted by the availability again of experienced centre-back and club skipper James Clarke, the former Bristol Rovers central destroyer, now 36, has clocked up 450+ appearances. Influential defender Lee Jenkins also returns at Crewe.

Newport's Wales international midfielder Matt Smith is regaining full-fitness, as is right-back Liam Shepherd - which will delight Fuchs and Smith.

Exciting County academy graduate Moses Alexander-Walker might well figure at Crewe, his pace out wide could compliment central striker Courtney Baker-Richardson who will revisit a club where he bagged many of his 42 goals in 218 games.

Yet the Exiles will be wary of Alexandra's goal machine Emre Tezgel, though. The borrowed Stoke raider has bagged 10 strikes so far this season - two in three matches, coming into the Newport clash.
