Tonight (27 Jan), Newport County and Accrington Stanley clash at Rodney Parade in a huge League Two encounter.
Though the two teams have only locked horns since 2013, there have been some brilliant clashes between the two in that time.
Here is a look at a Famous Five wins for County against their Lancastrian opponents...
Newport County 4-1 Accrington Stanley | 3rd August 2013
Every County fan remembers where they were for this one!
After winning the Conference Playoff Final the previous season, Newport found themselves back in the Football League for the first time in the club’s current form, and the first time at all since 1988.
Accrington had established themselves as a regular presence in the fourth tier, promoted in 2006 and play-off semi-finalists in 2011. Notably, James Beattie made his managerial debut for this one, following a season playing for the club in 2012-13.
However, in front of an opening day crowd of 4,631, Newport stole the show on their EFL return, with Harry Worley and Christian Jolley scoring either side of a Chris Zebroski brace.
Only one point separated the two at the end of the season, with Newport in 14th and Stanley a place below.
Accrington Stanley 0-2 Newport County | 27th March 2015
Newport’s first away win against Accrington came at a pivotal time in an eventful season.
County had stormed the league for the first half of the season, ending up in the automatic promotion places by January. But a dip in form, exacerbated by the departure of Justin Edinburgh to Gillingham, threatened to curtail their bid for a top-six finish.
Meanwhile, Accrington Stanley were now under the guidance of John Coleman, back for a second spell after his first 13-year stint from 1999 to 2012.
On a midweek evening, Jimmy Dack and his squad left the north of England with all three points thanks to goals from Aaron O’Connor and Shaun Jeffers, leaving them in a playoff spot.
Unfortunately, a run of four defeats in their next five games saw County’s promotion hopes crumble, and they finished the season in ninth-place. Accrington grinded to a 17th-place spot to comfortably avoid relegation.
Newport County 1-0 Accrington Stanley | 22nd April 2017
County had already picked up a 3-1 victory over Stanley this season, but times were desperate by the time the reverse fixture came around.
Newport were eleven points off safety by the time Graham Westley departed in March, with recent Hall of Fame inductee Michael Flynn joining what seemed to be an inevitable relegation to non-league.
However, a run of victories – three in their previous four before this game – saw an unlikely chance to save their EFL status in the final three matches.
With Accrington unbeaten in the league since the 11th February, County needed to dig deep to lift themselves out of the relegation zone with a result.
However, a header from Ryan Bird brought them out of the bottom two and gave them a priceless win.
Despite losing to Carlisle the following week, County’s last-day heroics at home to Notts County saw them complete a second ‘Great Escape’ in the club’s history, reminiscent of the1976-77 campaign.
Accrington secured a 13th-place finish after a season which saw them knock Premier League Burnley out of the EFL Cup.
Newport County 2-1 Accrington Stanley | 24th April 2018
For the first time in their history, Accrington Stanley were heading to the third-tier of English football, promoted from League Two and fixated on clinching the title.
Whilst Michael Flynn had not quite achieved the same in his first full season, the vanquishing of Leeds United in the FA Cup – as well as taking Tottenham Hotspur to a replay – had been the catalyst for a vastly-improved league performance which saw them in the upper-half of the table.
John Coleman’s side were on a 15-game unbeaten run coming to Rodney Parade, and had the opportunity to win the league crown with a win.
But County were determined to prolong their celebrations: Pádraig Amond and Frank Noublenetted either side of the break to bring their scintillating form to a halt.
Stanley would go on to win the title at home to Lincoln City four days later, whilst Newport rallied to finish 11th.
Accrington Stanley 0-1 Newport County | 11th October 2025
It is only fair we finish with the last meeting between the two, as Newport pulled off their third ever victory at the Crown Ground.
After a victory away to Crawley, eight defeats in their next nine games saw the Amber Army glued to the bottom of League Two.
Accrington were not fairing a great deal better, with two wins from their opening 11 matches leaving them in the bottom end of the table.
In a tense match, Isaac Sinclair diverted Bobby Kamwa’s cross into his own net before half-time – despite late Accrington pressure, David Hughes’ side hung on for their second win of the week, following a famous turnover of Cardiff City in the EFL Trophy.
Newport were 23rd and Accrington were 20th at the close of play.
