Kyle Cameron excited to return to Newport County after 10-year absence

Newport County defender Kyle Cameron says he is "really looking forward" to returning to Rodney Parade after completing his move back to the club ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The centre-back returns to South Wales a decade after a brief loan spell with the club, arriving with a wealth of experience across the EFL and National League, where he has captained sides and played in promotion-winning teams.

Speaking in his first interview as a Newport County player, Cameron said he is excited to begin the next chapter of his career.

“I'm really looking forward to it. It's been 10 years since I was here and a lot has changed. The club seems to have improved a lot, both on and off the pitch, so I'm excited to get going.”

Having experienced both the highs and lows of professional football, Cameron believes those experiences have helped shape him into the player he is today.

“I've had a lot of highs and a lot of lows throughout my career. I just want to bring the best version of myself here and try to impact the team in the best way I can.”

Now 29, Cameron says supporters can expect a much more complete defender than the teenager who first arrived at Rodney Parade.

“I'm a completely different player to the one I was when I was 19. I think I can do a little bit of everything. I can defend when I need to, but I can also carry the ball out from the back and play good football as well.”

Leadership has become a key part of Cameron's game, having captained several clubs throughout his career, and he hopes to bring those qualities to Newport County.

“I've been privileged to captain most of the clubs I've played for. I feel it's part of my character to be a leader, set standards on and off the pitch and help those around me. Once I settle in here, that's something I'll look to do.”

Cameron also revealed that his previous spell at Rodney Parade, together with the club's ambition this summer, made the move an easy decision.

“It's always been a club I've looked out for since I was here when I was younger. It feels like a good point in my career to come back. The signings we've made this summer are really positive, we look like we're going to be competitive, and hopefully I can add to that and help us achieve something special.”

With the new season fast approaching, Cameron is already looking forward to reconnecting with the Amber Army.

“I'm looking forward to seeing the Amber Army again. It's always been a tough place to come as an away player because the fans get right behind the team. I'm looking forward to seeing them all again.”
