Kyle Cameron spoke to the media ahead of Newport County’s Emirates FA Cup First Round tie against Walsall at Rodney Parade, discussing the importance of progressing in the competition, the challenge ahead and County’s positive start to the season.
Cameron is hoping County can begin another memorable FA Cup journey, with the defender having been part of the squad during the club’s memorable run to the Fourth Round in 2019, when the Exiles were eventually knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur.
With that run having started against Walsall, Cameron is hoping history can repeat itself as County look to secure their place in the next round.
“That's something I think we'd like to emulate this season and get a good Round Three, a big away day. That'd be brilliant for the club.”
The defender admitted he is yet to experience a major FA Cup tie himself and is eager to help County progress, with the prospect of a trip to Newcastle United particularly appealing.
“I've never had a big tie myself, so I'd love to do that this year.”
Cameron recognises that Saturday's opponents will provide a difficult test, describing Walsall as a side with similarities to County in their organisation, direct approach and attacking threat.
“They're going to be solid, organised, direct at times and score lots of goals. Tough test, but one we're looking forward to.”
The defender also highlighted the importance of an FA Cup victory in building momentum and confidence within the squad, particularly if County can overcome higher-league opposition.
“It's just about winning games of football. These one-off games when you come up against teams that are maybe in a higher league than you and you beat them, I think that just instils a little bit of confidence in the lads.”
County head into the tie having made a positive start to their Sky Bet League Two campaign, with Jameson pleased with the progress made while recognising there is still plenty of room for improvement.
“It's a good start, it's a steady start. There's still a long, long way to go and lots of improvements that we can still make as a squad.”
The captain also praised the defensive work of the team, highlighting the importance of maintaining their organisation and continuing to build on the clean sheets achieved this season.
“We've got goals on the team, we know that. We just need to keep tight in the back, keep securing it.”
With County continuing to build momentum in the league, Cameron is hopeful that a strong performance on Saturday can provide another positive result and keep the club's FA Cup ambitions alive.
“I think we can have a good season, and I think a good Cup run alongside that would be good.”
