Newport County kick off their 2025-26 campaign with a trip to Barnet in the Preliminary Round of the Carabao Cup, with a place in the first-round proper on the line.
This is the first time the Carabao Cup has included a Preliminary Round, introduced following structural changes to the competition to accommodate the nine clubs in the Premier League who have qualified for European competition this season. The two lowest-ranked EFL clubs from last season (Newport County and Accrington Stanley) were drawn into this early stage, with Barnet and Oldham Athletic completing the tie as the two promoted sides from the National League.
A victory on Tuesday night would see the Exiles progress to the First Round, where they will host Championship outfit Millwall.
Speaking ahead of the season opener, manager David Hughes said, “We’re really excited to get the season up and running. Barnet have recently got promoted so they’re going into this game with the momentum from last season, which we have to be aware of. We know how tirelessly the lads have worked this pre-season, and we feel organised and structured with clarity with how we want to play. Tuesday’s game is the first step into the next part of our season and we’re very excited. There are no thoughts on Saturday’s opening league game. We’re always going be to fully focused on the next game.”
The Opposition
After a strong 2024/25 campaign in the National League, Barnet secured promotion back to the EFL, marking a new era for the North London club under manager Dean Brennan.
Known for their attacking style and strong home record at The Hive, Barnet will be aiming to mark their return to EFL competition with a statement performance in front of their home fans.
Head-To-Head
The Exiles have faced Barnet on ten occasions, after first meeting in 1970 where Barnet claimed a convincing 6-1 win in the FA Cup. Overall, it’s been Barnet who have just edged out Newport, with 5 wins compared to County’s 2 victories. The teams have shared the spoils on three occasions.
Last Time Out
The two sides last met in an FA Cup replay in December 2023, where Newport County ran out 4-1 winners. Goals from Lewis Payne, Omar Bogle, and a brace from Seb Palmer-Houlden helped County seal a dominant victory at The Hive.
