Match Preview | Fleetwood Town

.

On Saturday afternoon (28 Feb), Newport County visit Fleetwood Town in another pivotal EFL League Two matchday.

Newport could rise off the bottom of the division if they win and results go their way.

Fleetwood are 14th, with a recent resurgence seeing them rise up the table.

State of Play

Newport County’s homecoming to Rodney Parade ultimately ended in a 2-0 defeat to Cambridge United.

However, The Exiles will take great credit from holding a side in the top three for large spells of the match.

With Christian Fuchs set to return after missing last Saturday’s game due to illness, County hope they can wrap up a hectic month of travelling with a performance to put themselves on the tails of their relegation rivals.

Four out of Newport’s six games in March are at home, and a good result at Highbury could provide a platform ahead of another huge 31 days.

Our Opponents

Fleetwood Town have perked up over the past month, winning two of their last three and steering themselves away from the bottom set of teams.

After a dramatic comeback against Barrow, going from 2-0 down to winning 3-2, they are now nine points off the play-off places, and 18 clear of the relegation zone.

After replacing Pete Wild with interim boss Matt Lawlor, the club have won half of his six matches in charge.

Their next home game is on the 10 March (vs Cheltenham Town), with trips to Walsall and Gillingham to come before then.

Head-to-Heads

This is the sixth meeting between the two sides, with the first meeting only coming in 2013.

So far, the fixture has belonged to the Fylde Coast, with Fleetwood never losing to Newport in any of their competitive meetings.

Furthermore, Newport’s only two previous trips to Highbury have ended with a combined scoreline of 6-1 to The Fishermen.

County have held Fleetwood to two 0-0 draws at Rodney Parade, but lost the reverse fixture in South Wales 2-0 last December.
