preview

Newport County continue in League action as they take on Gillingham this Saturday (October 3) at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

County will be looking to continue their form from home, as they remain unbeaten in their last two matches.

On the other hand, Gillingham will be looking to get back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats.

Here is everything you need to know about our opponents:

The Opposition

The Gills finished 17th in the League last season despite having a strong start to their campaign, but were unable to keep their run of form as they managed to lose three of their last five games.

Gillingham were also knocked out of the EFL Cup in the first round after suffering a defeat against Wimbledon on penalties.

Likewise, the Gills were also knocked out of the first round of the FA Cup by the Exiles after an initial 2-2 draw saw both sides go to a penalty shootout in which Newport won.

So far this season, Gillingham sit in eighth place having won three league games. But they have been knocked out of the EFL Cup by Luton Town.

The History

Gillingham were founded in May 1893 under the name New Brompton Football Club.

The club joined the Southern League in 1894 and would win Division Two in 1895. They would go on to defeat Swindon Town to earn promotion.

New Brompton would rename themselves to Gillingham throughout the 1912-13 season without the shareholders' knowledge.

Gillingham would first feature in the Football League in 1920 but would finish bottom of Division Three. They would continue to fall down the leagues, where they would eventually find themselves in the Third Division South in 1938.

However, after World War Two, the Gills would return to the Football League in 1950 after being re-elected into the league.

And in 1964, Gillingham would win Division Four after edging the top spot from Carlisle United on goal difference.

Gillingham would suffer relegation back to Division Four in 1971 and would go back and forth between Division Three for many years.

But, in 1995 Gillingham entered administration and were threatened to be expelled from the Football League. However, Paul Scally brought the club and saved them from being expelled.

Tony Pulis took charge of the club not long after and immediately earned promotion, with the Gills going a step further and reaching Division One in 2000.

But by 2008, the Gillingham would return to League Two, where they have since bounced around League Two and League One.

The Manager

The current manager of Gillingham is Gareth Ainsworth.

Ainsworth initially started his managerial career as a player-manager, where he became the caretaker on two occasions for Queens Park Rangers.

However, he earned his first permanent job in 2012, when he became the manager of Wycombe Wanderers.

After over 10 years in charge, Ainsworth re-joined QPR and has since also held jobs at Shrewsbury Town and, as of current, Gillingham.

Ainsworth was able to gain promotion on two occasions with QPR as well as winning numerous manager of the month awards, with his most recent coming in August 2025.

Ones To Watch

James Brophy has been a fan favourite for Gillingham since joining from Cambridge United in the summer. Brophy currently has three goals in eight appearances in the league this season and has also created many chances, helping the Gills sit just outside the playoffs.

Nick Freeman has also got off to a good start since signing from Shrewsbury Town at the start of this season. Freeman has managed to provide three assists so far this season where he has averaged an assist every two games in his last six matches. The midfielder will be looking to continue this chain against County at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.
