A midweek encounter in League Two sees Accrington Stanley travel to Rodney Parade to face Newport County this Tuesday evening (27 Jan).
Newport have renewed belief that they can fight their way out of a relegation battle after a weekend victory against Chesterfield.
Accrington Stanley are looking at advancing upwards after a mixed start to 2026.
State of Play
Saturday’s 2-1 victory against Chesterfield could prove to be just the tonic for Christian Fuchs, who claimed his second win at Rodney Parade in charge.
Newport lifted themselves off the bottom to overtake Harrogate Town, but still rest in the bottom two as it stands.
However, The Exiles are just a point behind Bristol Rovers, and two behind both Shrewsbury and Crawley, meaning they could end the evening as high as 20th.
Our Opponents
A sluggish start to the season has been overcome by John Doolan’s Accrington side, who now sitfirmly mid-table.
After finishes of 17th and 21st in their first two seasons back in League Two following relegation, the club were pegged as relegation contenders ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
However, just three defeats in their last 13 games have seen them rocket away from the relegation dogfight, leaving them 16th with 34 points.
Both Oldham Athletic and Fleetwood Town are only are a point ahead, giving Stanley the chance to rise two places in the table with a win.
What They Said
John Doolan relished the trip to South Wales following his side’s resilient performance away at Walsall.
“It’s a game that we’re looking forward to. They’ve had a good result themselves at the weekend,we can’t wait for it.
“The clean sheets we’ve had breed confidence, give momentum going forward, and the mindset to get another one.
“The squad at the minute can hopefully be added by the end of the window to make us a bit stronger, and we’ve got the quality to rotate.
“We know the challenge of Newport and what they’re going to bring, they’ve added one or two themselves, so we’ll be up for a fight.”
Head-to-Heads
Newport have the upper hand in meetings between these two, winning seven of the fifteen playedsince 2013.
In fact, County did not lose in their first five league encounters with Accrington, before a 2-0 defeat in March 2016 gave Stanley their first victory over their counterparts.
Since their relegation from League One in 2023, Accrington have won three of the five meetings between the two, including a 5-0 thumping last March.
But County claimed the three points in the last clash, with Isaac Sinclair’s own-goal giving them a win on the road in October.
