Match Preview | Newport County vs. Chesterfield

MATCH PREVIEW

Newport County face their first Friday night game of the season (October 30) as Chesterfield travel to Rodney Parade.

County will be looking to return to winning ways whilst Chesterfield look to build on their 5-1 victory against Crewe.

Here is everything you need to know about our opponents.

The Opposition

Chesterfield finished sixth in League Two last season, finishing in a playoff position but were knocked out by eventual winners Notts County.

In the FA Cup, the Spireites made it to the second round after defeating Stevenage but were knocked out by Doncaster Rovers.

However, they were eliminated in the first round of the EFL Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Mansfield Town.

So far, Chesterfield sit in seventh with 19 points, where they could potentially climb to a promotion spot depending on results.

The History

Despite the current club being formed in 1919, there is a history of many other formations of Chesterfield clubs.

The Spireites became founding members of the Football League Third Division North two years after they formed and won the division 10 years later.

Chesterfield's best league finish came after the Second World War as they finished fourth in Division Two.

The club would suffer relegation and would bounce between promotion and relegation whilst struggling with financial difficulties.

But during the 1996/97 season, Chesterfield would find their way to the semi-final of the FA Cup before they were eliminated by Middlesbrough.

Chesterfield would suffer further financial struggles in the early 2000's and was saved by the supporters' group.

Furthermore, the club would be relegated from the English Football League in 2018 for the first time in 121 years.

However, in the past few years, Chesterfield has had campaigns in League One, League Two and the National League, where they currently play their football in League Two.

The Manager

The current manager of Chesterfield is Paul Cook.

Cook is a very experienced manager, having started at Southport, with the Englishman also formerly managing Ipswich Town, Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth.

Cook has had two stints at the Spireites, first managing the club from 2012 to 2015.

During this time, the club won the League Two title and reached the League One playoffs.

The Chesterfield manager has won many League One and League Two manager of the month awards, as well as winning League One and League Two.

Ones To Watch

Louie Marsh has found himself in hot form since joining Chesterfield on loan from Sheffield United. Marsh has scored seven goals and provided two assists in all competitions this season, and when not scoring goals, he has helped dominate in the middle of the pitch.

Although Liam Mandeville has not started many games this season, the Chesterfield veteran made the most of it in his latest start. A goal and two assists from him helped the Spireites cruise past Crewe as they beat them 5-1 with Mandeville surely wanting to prove himself more against Newport.
