This Saturday (1 August) sees Newport County face Yeovil Town as they travel to Huish Park.
Hayden Mullins will manage his first game for the club as he looks to get straight to work.
The Opposition
Yeovil Town currently play in the National League where they finished 16th in the National League with a total of 51 points.
Luke McCormick and Terrell Works both shared the top goal-scoring title for Yeovil as they both scored eight goals in the league last season.
Their biggest win last season came against relegation battlers Aldershot Town as they put four past their backline and came away with a 4-1 victory.
So far this pre-season the Glovers have had a mixture of results as they have defeated Cardiff City and Melksham Town whilst drawing to Merthyr Town and Farnham Town. However, Yeovil did suffer a 3-2 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.
The History
Yeovil Football Club was founded in 1890 and were not officially called Yeovil Town until 1907.
The Glovers first gained attention during the 1946/47 FA Cup as they reached the fifth round but were ultimately knocked out, losing to Manchester United 8-0.
From the years 1955 to 1973 Yeovil won the Southern Football League three times and in 1976 applied to be accepted into the English Football League but were denied.
Success did come to Yeovil though as in 2001 the Glovers would win the FA Trophy.
Furthermore, Yeovil would work hard and officially make it to the Football League in 2002 as they gained 95 points and won the league with a 17-point difference.
It only took the Glovers two seasons until they climbed to League One where they won the league with 82 points.
Success continued as on the 19th May 2013, Yeovil defeated Brentford 2-1 in the League One play-off final to reach the Championship.
But, the Glovers only spent one season in the second tier of English Football and began to fall through the ranks.
And in 2019 Yeovil returned to the National League and would eventually be relegated to the National League South before re-entering the National League in 2024.
Shared Shirts
Josh Sheehan, who is now a Welsh international, has featured for both County and Yeovil in the early stage of his career. Sheehan first joined Yeovil and had two loan stints at the club. At the Glovers he played in League One and League Two and made 29 appearances. His performances earned him an initial loan at the Exiles before being signed permanently in 2018.
Sheehan asserted himself as a consistent starter at Newport as he made over 150 appearances. The midfielder scored 15 goals and provided 15 assists across his stay in South Wales as well as playing in vital playoff games and historic FA Cup games against Man City and Brighton.
Jordan Green is another player who has shared the shirt between both clubs. Green was loaned to Newport in 2016 before joining Yeovil permanently in 2017. The winger would later return to South Wales in 2020 for the second half of the 2019/20 season.
Throughout his two stints at County, Green played in 29 games as he scored three goals and managed one assist. The forward’s best game came in the FA Cup against Alfreton in a 4-1 win as he got a goal and an assist.
Green’s best success in the EFL came whilst playing for Yeovil as he played 68 games for the Glovers, scoring eight goals and providing five assists. His biggest game for the club came against Manchester United in which they lost 4-0 but made it to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
