Match Report | Crawley Town 1-2 Newport County

MR Crawley Away

Newport County continue their unbeaten start to the season in a 2-1 victory over Crawley Town away at the Broadfield Stadium.

The Exiles took the lead through a composed finish from Kai Whitmore and debutant, Liam Shephard doubled the lead from close range.

The Hosts scored a consolation goal moments before the full time whistle through a Max Anderson Volley.

The first chance of the match fell to Crawley Town as Wing-Back, Ade Adeyemo struck the ball from close range and forced Nik Tzanev into a reactionary save.

Just moments later, Adeyemo flew down the left flank once again and had his effort from a difficult angle tipped over the crossbar by Tzanev.

The Exiles’ first chance came in the 29th minute when a Cameron Antwi Corner was met by a Lee Jenkins shot that was well blocked and cleared by the Crawley defence.

Newport County’s best chance of the half came from Whitmore as the midfielder showed a fantastic bit of footwork on the edge of the box to open himself up for a shot which left Harvey Davies stretching to tip the ball just past the post.

Half-Time

Early into the second half, Lee Jenkins was shown a yellow card following a late challenge on Gavan Holohan.

Following some good pressing from Whitmore, the tenacious midfielder won the ball and attempted to play Ged Garner through on goal, but the striker was unable to beat the rushing Davies to the ball.

Kabongo Tshimanga did well to take the ball past Tzanev and was faced with an open goal but the Experienced attacker fired the ball over the crossbar.

The Red Devil’s had another opportunity to open the score after a header from a looping corner was put just wide of the post.

It was the Exiles who went in front as Matt Smith threaded Whitmore through on goal and the midfielder did fantastically well to take the ball past the rushing Davies and composedly tucked it in the back of the host’s net.

Almost instantly, it was the returning Exile, Shephard, who doubled County’s lead as he met the ball that was tipped on by Matt Baker and volleyed home from close range.

The hosts pulled one back late on through a Max Anderson Volley but the match was drawn to a close just moments later.
