With this Saturday marking International Women’s Day, this week’s Matchday Playlist proudly features a strong female presence.
Included are legends of British music such as Florence and The Machine, Blondie, and The Cranberries. Rising stars Wet Leg also make an appearance, alongside Halifax-born artist Ellur.
Fresh off the heels of St David’s Day, the playlist also highlights an impressive selection of Welsh artists. The iconic sounds of Stereophonics and Manic Street Preachers take centre stage, alongside Newport-based indie rockers The Rogues—familiar faces at Rodney Parade.
This Week’s Featured Artists
Two of the Same – Dancing on a Landline
Formed by identical twins Harriette and Charlotte Robinson, Two of the Same are a band to watch, emerging from Manchester’s world-famous music scene. Dancing on a Landline draws clear inspiration from the ‘90s rock and roll bands that put Manchester on the map. With their first release of the year set for March 21, 2025 is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for the duo.
Lady Garden – Funny
Despite forming less than a year ago, this all-female riot punk band from Cardiff is already making waves, having played to sold-out crowds across South Wales. Their debut single, Funny, has gained airplay on BBC Radio Wales and Newport City Radio, and they promise this is only the beginning.
Xempa – Here as I Am
This debut release from Newport/Cwmbran band Xempa showcases their signature genre-blurring style, blending the soulful vibes of R’n’B, the groove of funk, the lyrical flow of hip-hop, and the raw energy of rock. The track marks an exciting new chapter for their lead singer, known to many as The Honest Poet. Their single is available now.
