New signing Matt Smith is eager to make an impact at Newport County after joining the Exiles ahead of the new League Two season.
The midfielder arrives at Rodney Parade with valuable experience across the EFL and abroad, and he’s looking forward to bringing that knowledge to his new club.
“I’m delighted to be here,” said Smith. “It’s something that’s been in the pipeline over the last week or so and, as soon as I heard about it, I jumped at the opportunity. I’m really excited for the future.”
Smith’s career has already taken him across different leagues and countries, and he believes those experiences have helped to shape him both on and off the pitch.
“I’ve been fortunate to experience different cultures, different teams, and different systems, which have definitely helped shape me as a player. I’ve learnt from both the positive and challenging moments and used them to grow stronger."
The Welshman has also represented his country at international level, an achievement he looks back on with pride and hopes to build on in the future.

“It’s always been a massive honour to represent Wales. Every time I put on the shirt was a really proud moment and something I look back on with fond memories. I’d love to get back to that level again. I spent a number of years involved in the set-up and it’s something I truly cherish.”
Smith believes his international experience has developed his leadership qualities, something he’s keen to bring into the dressing room at Newport.
“Being around players of that calibre, you see the standards every day in training and around the camp. I’ve learnt a lot from those players, and I hope to take those experiences forward here.”
The midfielder has already had conversations with Manager David Hughes, who played a big part in his decision to join the club.
“I’ve worked with the manager before, so we already have that connection. We had a really good conversation, and he knows who I am, what I can bring, and the type of person I am. For me, it was a no-brainer. I’m really excited to be part of it.”
Looking ahead to the season, Smith is focused on contributing to the team’s success and helping the Exiles climb the table.
“I want to be a big part of this team and help Newport push up the league and finish as strongly as possible. It’s got a fantastic fanbase. I’ve always admired the club from afar, especially with the Welsh connection, and I’ve seen the passion the fans bring.”
And his message to the Amber Army?
“I’m hungry to be a Newport County player and I’m really excited about what’s ahead. I know the fans will get behind me and the team, and I can’t wait to get going.”
