Newport County is delighted to strengthen its partnership with the University of South Wales (USW), creating valuable opportunities for students while strengthening the connection between education and professional football.
The collaboration sees Newport County's first team based at the University's Sport Park, where the squad trains and carries out elements of its day-to-day football operations. Building on that strong foundation, the partnership has developed into a wider relationship designed to provide students with real-world industry experience across a range of areas within the club.
Students are already benefiting from the partnership through placements and internships across press and media, football analysis, physiotherapy, fashion, strength and conditioning and other key areas, with further opportunities planned throughout the upcoming academic year.
The partnership reflects Newport County's commitment to supporting the next generation of talent by providing students with the opportunity to gain valuable experience within a professional football environment.
One of the club's own success stories is academy head of coaching Ben Gast, whose career journey began at USW before progressing into professional football.
Ben studied at USW as both an undergraduate and postgraduate student before building a career with Swansea City and Bristol City, before joining Newport County.
Reflecting on his journey, Ben highlighted the importance of USW's industry links and practical learning opportunities in helping him develop his career.
"The connections through the course leaders were fantastic in terms of introducing me to people in the industry," he said.
"The combination of practical coaching experience and academic study gave me the knowledge and confidence to build my career in professional football."
Ben also praised the continued support he has received from academic staff throughout his career.
"I still regularly speak to USW lecturers who have always had my best interests at heart. That support has continued throughout my career."
Now academy head of coaching at Newport County, Ben believes the partnership provides current students with an excellent opportunity to gain experience and develop within the football industry.
"It's exciting to work with talented, motivated students who are just starting out in their careers," he said.
"At a club like Newport County, students often get opportunities to be involved in meaningful projects. We've seen student interns progress into employment, and the experience they gain through placements can genuinely open doors for them."
Newport County CEO Sam Houldsworth said the partnership highlights the club's commitment to creating opportunities for young people while strengthening links across South Wales.
