Newport County AFC is pleased to confirm the appointment of Sam Houldsworth as the club’s new Commercial Director, as the Exiles continue to strengthen their off-the-pitch operations and build towards a sustainable future.
Sam joins the club with a strong background in both football and business, as well as close ties to the city. A Newport resident, he has spent the past decade involved with Newport City FC, gaining hands-on experience across football operations at grassroots and semi-professional level. Alongside his football experience, Sam brings almost 20 years’ experience in recruitment and has also established and run his own business, providing him with a strong understanding of commercial development, partnerships and long-term planning.
In his new role, Sam will focus on supporting and growing the club’s commercial activity, strengthening relationships with existing partners, identifying new leads, restoring past relationships and developing new opportunities to improve Newport County’s financial position in a sustainable way.
A key area of focus will be ensuring that sponsors feel connected to the club and proud of what Newport County represents, while promoting the club in a positive and professional light. Sam will also work closely with the media team to develop the Club’s digital and social media strategy, helping to better tell the club’s story, engage supporters and explore opportunities to monetise its growing online platforms through sponsorship.
Speaking on his appointment, Sam said:
“As someone who lives in Newport and has spent a large part of my life involved in football, this role means a great deal to me. I understand the challenges the club faces, but I also see the opportunity.
“Newport County has a passionate fanbase and strong community roots, and my aim is to help turn that support into sustainable off-the-pitch growth that benefits the club as a whole.”
Newport County recognises, and has communicated through recent supporter forums, the importance of growing commercially to support the long-term development of the club and enable continued investment across all areas of its operations.
This appointment reflects Newport County’s commitment to maximising its resources, people and connection with the city, as the club collectively works towards strengthening matchday attendances, increasing engagement with club content and building long-term partnerships that support Newport County both on and off the pitch.
