As Newport County take the short trip to Cheltenham Town this Saturday, let's take a look at past players that have shared the shirt between the Exiles and the Robins.
Joe Day
Joe Day is the current starting goalkeeper for Cheltenham as he has started every league game so far this season but was once County’s number one.
Day first joined the Exiles on loan from Peterborough at the start of the 2014/15 season before joining them permanently halfway through the season. However, the goalkeeper did leave for Cardiff City in 2019 but rejoined County in 2021.
Throughout his two stints at the club, Day featured in 305 games for the Welsh side as he kept 87 clean sheets. Day also featured in many historical moments for the club such as the Great Escape and many memorable FA Cup runs.
However, in July 2024, the Englishman left the Exiles and joined Cheltenham where he has stayed since. During his time at the Robins Day has made 92 appearances as well as winning his first game for Cheltenham against Newport in a 2-1 win in the EFL Trophy.
Ryan Haynes
Ryan Haynes has shared the shirt between both Newport and Cheltenham as he currently plays for Brackley Town.
Haynes first played for Newport as he joined the club from Shrewsbury Town in 2019 and stayed in Wales for three years. Haynes was a key player during his time at the club as he played in 123 games, scoring seven goals and having five assists. Haynes also helped Newport get to a playoff final in 2021 with County narrowly missing out on promotion after losing 1-0 to Morecambe at Wembley.
After leaving County Haynes joined Northampton where he stayed for two seasons until joining Cheltenham in the summer of 2024. However, the defender only featured 15 times for The Robins as he missed most of the season where he mainly played towards the latter end of the season.
Ben Tozer
Ben Tozer is now retired from football as he is the assistant manager for Northampton U18s but enjoyed a successful playing career.
Tozer made his way to Wales in the summer of 2016 after playing his previous season at Yeovil Town. Tozer would stay at Newport for two years and make 76 appearances for the club and be a part of the team that forced Tottenham Hotspur to a replay during Newport’s 2017/18 FA Cup run.
But after his time at County Tozer left the Exiles for the Robins and became an impactful player for the club. Tozer helped Cheltenham win the League Two title and captained the team in a handful of matches. The defender also featured in Cheltenham Town’s matchup against Manchester City but were ultimately defeated 3-1 at home.
