Ahead of the launch of the 2025-26 kits, we asked our fans to share their favourite County strips, and their answers highlighted some truly iconic designs that tell the story of the club’s journey.

Here’s an in-depth look at the standout kits as chosen by the Amber Army:

2016–17 Home Kit – The Great Escape

Great Escape

The 2016–17 season is forever etched in Newport County folklore as the year of ‘The Great Escape.’ The Macron home kit, predominantly amber with black trim and a smart black collar, quickly became a symbol of determination. Fans played an active role in the kit’s design process, choosing a clean and classic look that embodied the club’s fighting spirit. This was the shirt worn on the final day of the season when Mark O’Brien scored the dramatic winner against Notts County, securing County’s League Two status in the dying seconds. The kit is cherished not only for its design but for the memories of a season where the club defied the odds and sparked hope for the future.

In a bold fusion of football and culture, the 2024–25 limited edition kit stands out as a celebration of Newport’s vibrant diversity. Developed by Lovers F.C in collaboration with local reggae metal band Skindred, and manufactured by VX3, this shirt integrates the colours of the Jamaican flag with modern graphic patterns inspired by Caribbean art. The limited-edition shirt replaced the traditional sponsor logo with ‘Skindred,’ cementing its unique status. It was unveiled during a home League Two fixture against Carlisle United and sold out rapidly due to its cultural significance and striking aesthetics. The partnership symbolises Newport County’s deep community connections beyond the pitch.

2012–13 Home Kit – The Play-off Final Win

The 2012–13 Macron home shirt holds a special place in County hearts as the kit worn during their historic return to the Football League. Sporting a classic amber base with black accents and proudly sponsored by Acorn Recruitment, this kit was on the backs of players who secured a 2–0 win over Wrexham at Wembley in the Conference play-off final. The simplicity of the design matches the no-nonsense determination of that team, and the shirt has become an enduring emblem of the club’s revival after 25 years outside the Football League.

1980–81 Home Kit – European and Domestic Cup Success

The 1980–81 adidas kit remains one of the most iconic strips in Newport County’s history. Featuring a clean amber design with black trim and notably free of commercial sponsorship—common for that era—this kit is inseparable from the club’s most successful period. Wearing this strip, County made a remarkable run in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, reaching the quarter-finals and defeating top European sides along the way. Domestically, the team lifted the Welsh Cup, solidifying their status as one of Welsh football’s powerhouses. The shirt’s minimalist style and historic significance make it a fan favourite and a cherished collector’s item.

2004–05 Goldie Lookin’ Chain Cup Kit

The 2004–05 cup kit collaboration with Newport’s own Goldie Lookin’ Chain (GLC) rap-comedy group brought an unmatched level of local pride and humour to the club’s wardrobe. Manufactured by Errea, the kit featured the band’s signature gold chain graphic across the chest, combining swagger with football culture. GLC took over as the shirt sponsor for cup games that season, merging their tongue-in-cheek style with Newport’s gritty character. This bold and memorable design was both a statement of community and a playful nod to the city’s unique cultural identity. Though unconventional, the kit is remembered with affection and laughter.

The 2017–18 season saw a return to classic styling with the FBT home kit, characterised by subtle horizontal hoops across an amber background, complemented by black side panelling. This kit is fondly remembered not just for its clean, traditional look but for the incredible moments it witnessed. It was the debut season for Padraig Amond, a player who would quickly cement himself as a fan favourite. But perhaps most memorably, this strip became synonymous with a remarkable FA Cup run. Newport County famously knocked out Championship side Leeds United in a thrilling 2-1 win at Rodney Parade and then took Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur to a replay after a dramatic 1-1 draw in South Wales. The kit, worn during these historic nights, is forever etched in the club’s modern folklore.

Designed by Hummel, the 2021–22 away kit broke away from traditional colours with a striking teal blue inspired by the River Usk, an iconic feature of Newport’s landscape. The shirt features ripple-like patterns symbolising flowing water, subtly connecting the club to its geographical roots. Details in amber provided a nod to the club’s heritage. The kit was made using Eco8 fabric, made from recycled plastic bottles, highlighting a commitment to sustainability. Fans appreciated the fresh look and the environmental message behind the design, making it a popular choice for the modern County supporter.

This kit gained immense recognition after being worn during the FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Manchester United at Rodney Parade, an unforgettable occasion for players and fans alike. The sleek, contemporary design balances heritage with modern football style, and the association with such a high-profile fixture has cemented this kit in the memories of County supporters.

The 2022–23 third kit, produced by Hummel, is a deliberate homage to Newport County’s iconic green away kit from 1998. This modern reinterpretation features bold vertical green and white stripes with white sleeves and shorts, preserving the spirit of the original strip while updating it with contemporary tailoring and fabric technology. The green kit is beloved by fans for its uniqueness and nostalgic value, harking back to a memorable era in club history. Its distinctive look and connection to the past made it an instant favourite among supporters.
