Bobby Kamwa | I was buzzing when the first goal went in

Bobby Kamwa

Bobby Kamwa was "buzzing" after scoring his second hat-trick of the season in Newport County's 3-1 victory over Gillingham on Tuesday night.

The winger netted all three goals in the first half, starting with a stunning free-kick and adding two more to complete a memorable performance.

Kamwa’s treble brings his season tally to eight goals in all competitions, following his previous hat-trick against MK Dons back in December.

And the 24-year-old was delighted to contribute to the win but also took pride in his team's overall performance.

“It was a great win tonight, but we can’t be too critical of the last two games, especially since we had been on a six-game unbeaten run before that,” he said.

“Obviously, we slipped up in the last two matches, but we knew tonight was a must-win game, so I’m really proud of the boys.

“On a personal level, I’m happy with how I played, and I know the team counts on me at times,” he added. “I’ve got a lot of responsibility, and it’s up to me to prove I can take the team forward and continue helping us win games.

“I was buzzing when the first goal went in tonight. All three goals were great, but the first one was definitely my favourite.

“The boys didn’t expect it from me, but sometimes I can pull things out of my locker, and fortunately, tonight was one of those nights. As soon as I took the free-kick, I knew it was going in.

“For me and the team now, we’ve got to take tonight’s performance into the next game and go again. That’s what we’re focused on now.”

Kamwa has enjoyed an impressive debut season with the Exiles, scoring eight goals from his wide position.

And he attributes much of his success to the opportunities and faith he’s received from head coach Nelson Jardim.

“I’ve really enjoyed the season so far, but I have to give a special mention to the gaffer,” Kamwa said.

"I'm enjoying working with him. We've got a great connection and I try to repay the faith that he's put in me.

“He’s stuck with me even when things haven’t gone so well, and I’ve played a lot of games. I’m really happy with that.

"I'm glad I could repay him with the goals tonight."
