Christian Doidge delighted to start Newport County chapter after joining hometown club

Doidge interview

Newport County striker Christian Doidge says he is “absolutely delighted” to be joining the club after completing his move to Rodney Parade ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The Newport-born forward returns to South Wales with a wealth of experience across the EFL, Scottish Premiership and National League, bringing leadership and attacking quality to the squad.

Speaking in his first interview as a Newport County player, Doidge said the move has been a long-time ambition.

“Yeah, absolutely delighted. It’s been a long time coming. It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do, it just hasn’t worked out that way during my career, but to get it over the line now, I’m really excited.”

Doidge arrives with a career built across multiple levels of the game, and says resilience has been key to his journey.

“I think the main one is resilience. It’s been a tough career, plenty of downs, not as many ups as you’d like, but that’s football. I’ve enjoyed every single second of it, and to come home now to my hometown club is just a dream.”

The experienced striker also highlighted the importance of his role within the squad, both on and off the pitch.

“It was quite clear the group was quite young last season and needed a few experienced lads to help out. I’ve been in a similar role before. Obviously I want to contribute on the pitch and score goals, but also help the younger lads because there’s some really exciting talent here.”

Known for his physical presence and goalscoring instinct, Doidge says he will bring a straightforward threat in front of goal.

“I’d like to say I’m quite an intelligent striker, finding little pockets in and around the box. Good in both boxes, probably known for my aerial threat. Just someone who likes to get across defenders and score goals.”

The 33-year-old admitted the move to Newport County is especially meaningful given his connection to the city.

“It’s my hometown club. I came here as a kid many times, watched the big games, even remember being down at Spytty Park as a mascot a few times. It’s just really special to come home and play for the club I grew up watching.”

Doidge also spoke about the current direction of the club and his excitement for the season ahead.

“It’s exciting times. Staying up on the last day last season, I remember watching it nervously. But now we kick on. The club is going in the right direction and I’m really excited.”
