Newport County AFC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Alan Smith, a proud Newport native and lifelong supporter of the club.
Born in Newport on 3 September 1949, Alan came through the club’s youth system as a talented young midfielder, fulfilling a dream shared by many local players when he made his first-team debut as a teenager. Having joined the club at the age of 16, he went on to make his senior debut at just 17 years old.
Between 1966 and 1972, Alan made over 100 Football League appearances for Newport County, scoring seven goals during his time at Rodney Parade. Operating primarily in midfield, often in the inside-right role, he became known for his energy, movement and ability to spot opportunities to advance play through the centre of the pitch.
Alan was part of the County side competing in the Fourth Division during a challenging period in the club’s history. His reliability and work rate helped provide stability in midfield across six seasons, and he remained a committed and respected member of the squad throughout his time at the club.
One example of his influence came in a league match against Exeter City in December 1967, where his quick thinking and burst through the middle created the opportunity for Len Hill to score Newport’s equaliser in a tightly contested game.
After leaving Newport County in 1972, Alan continued his playing career with Merthyr Tydfil in the Southern League.
His connection with the club, however, never faded. In later years Alan remained a loyal supporter and season ticket holder, continuing to follow the Exiles and sharing the matchday experience with fellow fans. His lifelong dedication to the club reflected the deep bond he had with Newport County and the community around it.
As a homegrown player who rose through the youth ranks to represent his hometown club in the Football League, Alan’s story embodies the spirit and identity of Newport County.
To honour Alan’s life and contribution to the club, a moment of applause will take place before the players enter the pitch ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Colchester United. Alan’s family will be in attendance at Rodney Parade as supporters pay tribute to Alan who remained part of the County family throughout his life.
Everyone at Newport County sends their deepest condolences to Alan’s family and friends at this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Alan.
Once County, always County.
